It's been about Three & a half years since I last added pics here (Lots has happened in the meantime, my Dad passing, my Mom in & out of hospital for over 2 years and my own breakdowns/bouts of depression). I came across this box set again, on one of my stacks of dvd's this week, so thought it was about time I completed this series! Today adding episodes 5, 8 & 26. -- Last edit: 2012-11-02 11:47:58 |

Certainly unusual crossing lights My comments at Traffic Lights in Internet Movie Car Database. |

rjluna2- small bulb for a street lamp! I'd blame 'von Smallhausen'("Allo Allo") for it! as he appears in this episode (1.13) also seen, an old police station lamp- |
◊ 2012-11-07 16:28 |
Hmm.. the small incandescent light bulb at the street light pole might be in Bayonet mount. Anyway, my comments at Street Lights at Internet Movie Car Database. |

Since you all appear to be so much younger than I, it is necessary for me to tell you that the lamp with the small bulb, probably 60 watt, almost certainly bayonet fitting in England, is a converted gas lamp. I have clear memories of seeing the milkman's horse and trap by gas light in the early hours of the morning, and of the open air markets in Walsall and Wolverhampton where the stalls would be lit by paraffin pressure lanterns on winter afternoons. |

Thanks, my comment is at the same comment block as I previously added at the Gallery of Lights. |

I can't do more than suggest that it would be post WW2. Areas that had been supplied with gas and electricity by the small and probably municipally owned local companies would now find that as the small outfits had been nationalised, voltages and systems became standardised and it therefore became cheaper and easier to apply electricity instead of gas. The other point was that you didn't need a bloke with a pole to go around lighting the electric lamps, which could be switched on and off centrally, or automatically. Some gas lights did have clocks and lighting mechanisms but not all by a long way. Electricity here was a mess until nationalisation, there were differing voltages and even some areas with DC supplies. The formation of the Central Electricity Authority, (later the CE Generating Board) and the large area distribution networks like the Midlands Electricity Board, pulled it all into shape. -- Last edit: 2012-11-10 20:36:28 |
