The bi-plane is a De Havilland DH.89A Dragon Rapide, built 1946, and the sea-plane is a Volmer VJ.22 Sportsman.
While the Dragon Rapide was first delivered in 1934 and therefore matches the period setting, the Volmer made it's maiden flight in 1958, more than 20 years after the film story. But being a kit-plane the rather simple design matches the early 1930s.

The series is almost as brilliant as the "generique". Anyway, car chase in today's episode (the one with the stolen medallions/miniatures) - what might have been an Austin police car chased a couple in what I think might have been a BMW.

It is a Stampe et Vertongen SV.4C built under licence either by S.N.C.A.N. (Societe Nationale de Constructions Aeronautiques du Nord -- short: Nord) in France or by A.I.A. (Atelier Industriel de l'Aéronautique d'Alger) in Algeria.

Those licence built versions were named Nord Stampe SV.4C or A.I.A. SV.4C and used a Renault 4-Pei engine. The Belgian built SV.4B used de Havilland Gipsy Major I engines, post-war more powerful Cirrus Major or Gipsy Major X.

The registration G-AAVX is not original. It belonged to a Saunders Roe A17 Cutty Sark flying boat which was sold to Canada and hence re-registered VR-SAA in 1930.

John, I have looked again at the screen captures I have of 'Murder On The Links' and can only find a distant background tourer that is too small to identify. I will make a note to re-visit the episode as it is frequently repeated.

If you can supply more information that would be good. It is always interesting when somebody has actual information about the cars used. :)

Were some of the external scenes shot in the UK (I think they could have been) or were they all in France?

Sunbar & Alexander. The car was my sons car that he had restored. I spent three or four days in Deauville and Trouville doing exterior shots. Much action was shot outside the Hotel Normandy (named Du Golf on screen) although interior shots of the hotel were actually done at Mentmore House near Aylesbury UK. I had a day filming there with My vintage Rolls Royce 20hp but it is only visible for a second or two as a background blocker in the doorway. I have a nice picture of the Citroen and also of a Chrysler outside the Hotel but have been unable to upload them (although I have tried). Film hire is great fun if you own an old car, especially if tourists are watching and you can overhear them wondering if you are someone famous! If you can send me an email address I will send some pictures that were taken on the set. john.barringer@ntlworld.com

In The Kidnapped Prime Minister there is a Beech 18. I guess this is in period as the protype Beech first flew in Jan 1937. Any comment on this? I doubt whether it would have flown on European international commercial flights in the 1930s but I might be wrong.
