"Newsreel footage" - I believe this is a Humber but a later model, as used by Chief Inspector Japp, than the one already listed.

Not a Humber - a 1936 Hillman Hawk (or possibly a Hillman 80, but I don't think so).

It is an Hillman 80 sports saloon of 1936 ,appears to have front hinged rear doors (safety direction). The 8O was introduced in 1936 and as the Hawk and Sixteen sv sixes received a new transverse independent front suspension called " Evenkeel".The 80 was Hillman's top of the line , the sports saloon version selling for £415.

pilou, looking at the position of the rear door handle, to me it looks to be at the front (next to the rear edge of the front door). That makes it a suicide door at the rear. Also from chris40's advertisement for the 80 the handle would be lower down (just above the rear wing), the Poirot car is higher and just below the glass.

I believe this could make it a Hawk, but not certain so I am looking at the episode again and seeing what captures are possible.

I did find an advertisment of the Hillman 80 that was published in the " Illustrated Sporting and Dramatic News" of may 29 , 1936 on page 499 of the Hillman 80 and yes you are right , when looking at this the rear door handle is much nearer to the rear fender almost above it.I had the impression with this picture that the rear door handle is much more remote to the back than it looks but that is what old movies are about.Fortunately we have documents .So a Hawk is fully plausible.Nice spotting !

I have looked at this and the following scene (showing a car going away from the camera which may be different due to editing) so many times I'm getting more confused. :??: This I think is a different car (it appears to have landau bars?).

So I am unable to get a better identification. Hawk, I guess, is the best from the main picture.

I wouldn't swear to it, but I think the car in the whirlpool is a post-war Humber Pullman landaulet, like this one:

The rear window of the Hillman Hawk looks a bit bigger than this one, doesn't it?

Good thinking chris40. :)

Not worth listing since the 'spinning newspaper' covers most of the frames where it is partially visible, however the Humber Pullman Landaulet is interesting.

Sunbar it is definitely not a Humber Pullman Landaulet as the badge on the boot in the whirlpool picture is that of a Hillman. Your guess that this is a 1936/37 Hillman "Hawk" is probably correct although it could also be a Hillman "16" or Hillman "80" Saloon as they have exactly the same front and grill. However without a side view it is impossible to tell. One point however is that the mascot on the bonnet (although not very clear in the picture) appears to have swept back horizontal wings which are generally found on the 1936 Hillman "Minx" but can also be found on some Hillman "16"s, rather than the vertical winged mascot which is usually attributed to the "Hawk" and "80" models although I believe the vertical wings can also be found on some Hillman "16"s especially those exported to Australia.
