The end year should be 2010, as this (sadly) was canceled last May.

There was also an episode in which a late-70s Pontiac Firebird played an important role in a murder case.
Spoiler - click here to see it
SPOILER: They hauled it in and found a gun hidden inside.

This show did air an episode in Season 1 that was based on a actual case; The Boy in the Box case.

Unlike the case in the episode, the real case occurred in February 1957.

On the afternoon of the 25th February 1957, a college student had discovered the body of a young boy aged between 3 and 7 was found wrapped up in a blanket inside of a cardboard box in the woods off Susquehanna Road in the Fox Chase Section of Philadelphia.

The investigation at the time revealed that the boy had signs of being stave severely and had scars on parts of his body and the box was the same one that contain a bassinet sold at the JC Penny's store at the intersection of 69th Street and Chestnut Street in Darby, Pennsylvania sometime between the 3rd December 1956 and the 16th February 1957.

Further investigations revealed that boy's age suggested that he was born sometime between 1950 and 1953 and that he was first found by a man who was checking his muskrat traps and had failed to report fearing his traps would be confiscated by police.

Over time, there were a number of theories to who was the boy and how did he died, one theory was that the boy was the son of a woman whose stepfather ran a foster home 1½ miles from the crime scene.

It was believed that the boy died accidently and was placed there by the stepfather and his stepdaughter to avoid the stepdaughter from being exposed as a unwed mother as it was considered as a stigma and a scandal at the time.

The theory was dismissed as the boy's DNA did not match the stepdaughter.

Another theory that was put forward by a woman (known as "M") was that the boy (whose said the name was Jonathan) was sold by his birth parents to M's abusive mother in the summer of 1954 where he was subjected to physical and sexual abuse for over two years.

M later stated that one evening, her mother bashed the boy after he vomited up his dinner of baked beans and had his head slammed against the floor and had rendering the boy unconscious and had later died while M's mother was given the boy a bath.

After the boy died, M's mother gave the boy a crude haircut and was placed the body in the boot of M's mother's car and drove to the scene.

M later stated that they were getting the boy's body out of the boot of the vehicle when a passing motorist had stop and offer to help but they're ignored him.

This theory was supported by a male witness who stated in February 1957 that he saw a vehicle similar to the one that the women were driving and had stop to offer help but was ignored so he drove off, he also stated that the women were blocking the rear number plate, another piece of evidence that supported the theory was the boy's autopsy found the remains of baked beans in the boy's stomach and the coroner noted the boy's fingers were water wrinkled.

To this day, the identity of the boy is still unknown and the identity of the boy's killer or killers are still unknown.

He is no longer unknown. Police used DNA to trace the family and found his birth certificate. They are supposed to have a press conference this week to announce the findings. "The sources say the DNA traced the child to a prominent family in Delaware County, Pennsylvania."

Wow, I don't believe this! I've been deeply invested in both the Boy in the Box and the Somerton Man, and was not expecting the former to be identified half a year after the latter. It truly is the season of miracles...

It's funny that I even found this comment, they recently started airing this show again on one of the cable channels run by HBOMax, and I watched a few eps last night. So I was looking at this page and noticed the comment and heard on the news that they finally figured out who the kid is. I thought jpts would like to know.

The boy has been identified using DNA collected in 2019. They matched it up to others on a genealogy website and were able to identify the mother. From there, they were able to pull up the birth certificate and ID'd the father. Both parents are dead. But he has living siblings, so police are not releasing the names of the parents out of respect to the living relatives. The police do not know definitively who the killer is but they have strong suspicions.

Thanks for the update, @night cub! It's been a while since I last checked this case and I had no idea of the news.

Before I forget, I'm watching Ep 7.18 right now, and early in the episode, at the drive-in theater, there is a Saab Sonnet III in the background that isn't listed. It's the first car you see as the camera pans from the sign to the lot.
