Quite a hodgepodge indeed. Obviously CGI, but I see 2x Aston Martin (probably V8 Vantage), a Lotus Elise, 2x Land Rover LR3, 2x Ford Aerostar, and a Porsche Cayenne among others.

@wasserspeier: new cars, destroyed in movies are often given for free by the makers, for product placement etc. Often they took "Zero-Series" for that, cars, which were destroyed by the companies anyways. A good example are all the new BMW's, destroyed at the Cobra 11-bullshit. Otherwise: at such an extreme expensive movie (Roland Emmerich-gigantomania...) the price for a few cars is nothing.

@dudley: yes, I remember, too. :) But the same idiocy happend several times before. Just look into magazines (mainly for youth, but scientific, too) from the 50ies and 60ies about the future in 1980. Or think about the hysteria in the "Orwell-Year" 1984.

@dudley: VW does so since the mid-70ies. Before they had sold sometimes a few 0-series-cars to employees or so. But this was stopped, because it has caused many problems with warranty and spare parts.

Just another "disaster" movie with tons of faky-looking CGI special effects. I'm a Christian and I don't think what is supposed to happen during the last days can happen in just 2 years. Just another movie with bad acting but tries to make up for it with tons of computer generated effects. From what I've heard and read this movie is already getting terrible reviews...big surprise! ;) Here is a copy of one review:

2012

"Have we reached the point where John Cusack — lean, boyish, briskly quizzical John Cusack - is the new Charlton Heston? We have, in the hideously expensive ($260 million) and simply hideous “2012.” This disaster movie not only mines Mayan myths for its dismal apocalypse, but offers as inspirational guide a futurist novel by a flop writer (Cusack) who is a limo driver. Brace yourself for 158 minutes of big-screen idiocy.

There’s time for Cusack to guide his ex-wife and their cute kids through immense, collapsing walls of digital effects, as the earth’s crust cuts loose from its core. Time for gifted Chiwetel Ejiofor to be a noble geologist who, as the world suffers hell, has love vibes with the President’s daughter (Thandie Newton). Time for the Sistine Chapel to fall into rubble. Time for Woody Harrelson to have ripe, cheap fun as a prophetic loon. Time for the power elite and some animals to get on board the “arks” that will carry them above the nightmare, for a sunny landing only weeks later (never mind that vast quakes, eruptions and floods would have surely made the planet uninhabitable for decades, maybe centuries).

Time for a toy Titanic to prefigure doom. Time for the head of the Louvre (Patrick Bauchau) to die much like Princess Diana. Time for George Segal, as a weary lounge singer, to warble the lyrics, “It ain’t the end of the world.” Time for a nibble of ancient Tibetan wisdom. Time to watch Santa Monica slide into the sea like a huge, burning waffle. Time for Oliver Platt to be a cold-hearted swine. Time for ludicrous rescues, and pitiful, last-minute calls. Time to care about a tiny dog. Time for San Diego pop sensation Adam Lambert’s end-credit song (”Time for Miracles”). Time for millions of victims to perish for our entertainment.

Above all, time for director/writer Roland Emmerich to pile this new heap of dung that will stack an equal pile of grosses. Emmerich, the current king of movie sado-masochism (”Independence Day,” “The Day After Tomorrow”), is having more than a ramped-up Irwin Allen party. He’s exploiting mounting anxieties about a world that now fears the onset of global warming and climate catastrophe. This grotesque escapism made me want to escape the world of Roland Emmerich."

I think I'll skip this crap. :/ Besides, I think there is to be seven years of trials and tribulations (aka chaos and horrible events) before the actual destruction of the world by God. Many other tell-tale things are to happen before that time as well. So, I don't think it's going to happen in less than 3 years. By the way, do NOT go see the movie "The Box" either...IT SUCKED even worse!!! The sad thing is, they still have talented actors/actresses...but Hollywood can't seem to make a decent movie anymore if their lives depended on it! I truly can't remember the last movie I actually went to see in the theater that was awesome or superb? Maybe the second "National Treasure?"

I didn't bother reading what that review bellow my comment says but I really don't care, cinema doesn't have to be perfect all the time, sometimes one feels like watching a film just to be entertained, and this is one of those, I thoroughly enjoyed it this evening, the special effects were simply perfect, specially those involving cities tearing apart all the way.

There were scenes in where I just didn't like the expressions and reactions of the actors, didn't feel too natural seeing what was happening arround, but except that, a pretty enjoable film, I also liked the ending.

Disaster movies are great simply becuase it's so awesome and mind-bending to see destruction on such an immense scale. Just as CarChasesFanatic said movies don't have to be absolute masterpieces to be entertaining. I don't go to see this type of film to get invloved with the characters and feel for them, I go to see a giant donut crush a police car.

Don't be so serious... try and forget whatever "God" ideas you have for an hour and a half and just enjoy a nice fictional apocolypse. Or at the very least don't criticize people who have the capacity to enjoy it. It doesn't have to be "Gone with the Wind" to be a nice entertaining film ;)

"Gone With the Wind" is a classic...but not one of my favorites. ;) I'm not trying to criticize anyone...I don't care if people enjoyed the movie. To each his or her own. I'm just sick of "disaster movies" in general. Forgetting the "God" ideas (which you obviously think are stupid ;) ) I usually don't like them because they're so overdone!!! From TV to the big screen, it's all been done many times before. Want a movie with tons of CGI...okay, but how about some new material! ;)

Ford_Guy US

2009-11-16 10:15

As the old saying goes, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. The fact is there will always be movies like this. It's all about the visuals. One movie will have the Hollywood sign (for example) getting destroyed by a tornado while another one will have it destroyed by an earthquake. They're just trying to re-invent the wheel. This discussion will pretty much go nowhere as we all clearly have our own ideas.

And never did taxiguy imply that God ideas "are stupid." I'm not sure what he thinks but to say "obviously" seems like a bit of a stretch given what he actually said.

HunterMan US

2009-11-17 02:56

This is true, Hollywood is always making movies like this and probably will...but that's what I sort of meant, is that (as what you stated) the wheel so-to-speak broke a long time ago!

As for what taxiguy said: Well, my degrees are in sociology and psychology. So, sometimes I start psychoanalyzing. When he used the term and/or phrase God ideas I immediately got the impression that he thought the stuff I'd mentioned towards God or what the Bible states is...ridiculous (perphaps "stupid" was too harsh a word--but I usually call it how I see it)? Instead of stating he thought it was ridiculous or pointless that I had included God...he used the phrase "God ideas"--ideas being the clue word, that perhaps he thinks the idea of God is foolish. Because of the way he'd worded it, it seemed "obvious" to me. But, I could be wrong! :) He'll have to clarify that.

Believe what you will, whatever "floats your boat" as they say. I just find it funny when people bring God/Religion/Bible into discussions that aren't really realted to it much at all. Seems like a bit of stretch in the context of what we were talking about here. As I said it's a fictional disaster movie that (I assume, but haven't seen it so don't know for sure) has no concrete mention or overtone of God/Religion as a major theme. So in that regard you kind of brought it into this movie discussion out of nowhere. Basically all I was saying. But I'm not holding it against you, no need for any of us to get upset over some disaster movie.

HunterMan US

2009-11-17 05:33

I never said that the movie was about or included God and the Bible in the plot. It probably doesn't. I just meant that with "end of the world" movies there's always talk about what brought about the end...in this case if I understand the previews correctly it's the Mayan calendar that predicted in 2012 the end will come. I only made the one comment originally that I was a Christian and don't believe that in less than 3 years the end will happen. Therefore it's definitely fictional! ;) My other comments were more about my opinion of the "overdone-a-million-times-over" disaster movie and the depressing plots they usually portray. I am not upset (I've laughed over most of this  ) with the movie...just think it's stupid and a much better, possibly more intelligent, movie with some CGI could probably be made. Again...just my opinion! :)

No, this movie is not my thing. Not necessarily because of whatever it might or might not include about God and the Bible...but more because of the depressing idea in the first place. Also because of the majorly overdone storyline idea, as well as the idea of the movie being mostly CGI rather than acting or plot.

As for your link to the 1999 movie "Dogma"--no, I didn't like the idea of that one either and did not watch it. It looked and appeared to be too blasphemous and sacreligious towards God. As for Jehova Witnesses running around in your village--LOL!!!!

As for your atheistic choice I can only hope and pray that someday you will at least consider God. Yeah, I know that may sound like a "weirdo" or a "Jesus Freak." Well, maybe I am weird but if believing and trusting in God makes me a weirdo then I guess I'm down right crazy! :) But, I'm not one that runs around screaming and carrying on like the stereotypical "Jesus Freak." You don't have to act like a "crack-head" to be filled with the Holy Spirit. ;) God loves everyone, no matter who they are. It's up to each person to try and follow God's word, but he loves and can forgive anytime and anyplace.

Something, which really sucks me at Roland Emmerich-movies, is the unbearable and bugging US-patriotism. Yes, Mr.Emerich is no US-citizen, but I cannot understand, why it's necessary for him to load his movies full with this hysterical patriotism/nationalism. As here:

/movie.php?id=96969

/movie.php?id=116629

/movie.php?id=319262

/movie_120685-Godzilla.html

At least his movies are always the same - which causes boredom. :/ A gigantomanic hyperactive destroy-orgy about any kinds of bad bad dangers and disasters, which treatening America (to be exact: Manhattan. Perhaps a few other US-symbolic places, too. But US-symbolic places in every case). And these catatstrophs will be beaten by a few single heros, on which noone has heard before. Boring, nothing else than boring. And annoying by the hysterical patriotism. :/

Maybe some US-members over here have a different view on the patriotism, but for me as a German (our own patriotism is quite reserved. One of the first comprehensive patriotism-attacs was indeed the soccer-world cup in 2006), it's too much and not understandable.

It's been exactly one year since the world was supposed to end! :)

Before the scene the bridge is crashing on the limo, we can see a easily recognizable 2005 Mercedes CLK and also a 2005 Acura TSX on it. Other vehicles are seen too during this destruction scene: 2004 BMW 5-Series and a 1997 Chevy Astro or something similar. A Mercedes R-Klasse can be seen when the plane is skimming the ground.

Mais a voir juste pour les effets spéciaux.

Tout ce que je déteste dans beaucoup de films des 20 dernières années… ç'est plus du cinéma, c'est du jeu vidéo…

All what I hate in those todays productions… looks like video games rather than cinema .

Are the scene: "the plane landing on the cliff and those supercars are throwed out" real or it is CGI scene?
Can't believe they use real supercars for just "throwing" them out from plane and destroy them.

Quite a hodgepodge indeed. Obviously CGI, but I see 2x Aston Martin (probably V8 Vantage), a Lotus Elise, 2x Land Rover LR3, 2x Ford Aerostar, and a Porsche Cayenne among others.

I also saw quite a few of Chevrolet Avalanches during the destruction scenes!
