That and I think the cops know about the Monarch and that they been trying to catch him for years as it was mentioned in the film that the Monarch had sponsored an number of F1 teams under various pseudonyms over the years.

The M3 GTR is perhaps the most iconic car of the video game franchise, and this car in the film would've captured the spirit of the games better.

I don't know, the M3 GTR is way too overused car in the games, it doesn’t feels the same since Most Wanted, Carbon should be its last appearance, it was a good decision to use a Shelby Mustang instead and talk about Shelby and his legacy

It was a good way of paying tribute to him, even if the Koenigsegg ended up replacing it at De Leon. The choice in cars made it clear the movie was more meant to emulate Hot Pursuit (2010) or Rivals which was the latest NFS title. I definitely do think if this movie were made today the M3 GTR would have some kind of role.
