It was used as part of a 2-3 minute chase with the Silverado Trophy Truck and the white Hummer H2 as they tried to stop the silver Mustang. Of the three, it seemed to have the least screen presence. Give it 2 stars for importance. |

I was around offroad racing in SoCal in the 70s and 80s. While this is a tribute Bronco, it's a fairly good one. The original Big Oly was a tube framed rear wheel drive "funny car" type buid; I don't think it even started with an early Bronco frame. The goal of Big Oly was speed, not off road prowess, so it was revolutionary at the time for being 2wd (you can see the stock front 4wd front axle in the tribute Bronco), with a LOT of wheel travel for a softer ride- the theory being that when you're in the air, you can't be accelerating or turning. Additionally, it's sides were fiberglass, and the tribute Bronco, while it's had it's door handles removed, still has door hinges on the front edges of the doors. Finally, the wing isn't quite the right shape, and the original vehicle had pop up Cibie Oscars that rotated up with a handmade handle in the middle of the roof underside. I remember it used a motorcycle grip. I took pictures for years of all the racers from about 1973 until 1980, and had several published. Someday, when I find them, I'm going to feel like a million dollars! |
