blurry convertiblah might be interesting : Chevy Corvair , which would fit the movie's theme , as said to be unsafe at any speeds... -- Last edit: 2026-02-24 20:59:25 |

"bonus dashboard:" 1988+ Ford Tempo (without the optional driver's side airbag) "bonus wrecks:" 1980-1985 Buick Skylark (upholstery narrows it to 1983-1985) "bonus oldtimer:" Looks French, maybe? -- Last edit: 2026-03-01 22:36:56 |

It's actually one of the Tempo's big claims to fame: |

![]() Was that for the American market only ? Because i'm sure if i'd walk in a Ford dealership even in the Tempo's last days and ask for an airbag , they'd still be laughing today .. ![]() |

Weren't the first optional (dual) airbag cars some GM cars in 1974? |
|

not sure for 1974 but 1975 Cadillac brochure does advertise it , at least for the driver Link to "oldcarbrochures.org" |

The key word is "supplemental". 1970s GM's airbags were a "Air Cushion Restraint System", meaning they were intended to be used as a replacement for seatbelts. Eventually as the decade came to an end people put down their cigarettes and sobered up enough to realize that didn't really work. The Tempo had a "supplemental restraint system" designed to work in combination with seatbelts. |

Ah ok, thank you for explaining. Didn't know the difference before. |

GM gets credit for installing airbags in production cars first, but they stopped after a few years. Ford started later, but once they started they never stopped. |

same here , just thought that " Air cushion " was a fancy name for the airbag now i wonder how many went thru it as i'd assume they were not wearing the seatbelt -- Last edit: 2026-03-02 02:08:35 |
