6-episode BBC drama following the lives of some 16-year old classmates after they leave school in East London in 1977. Each episode takes a year (ep1 = 1977-78, ep2 1978-79, etc) until 1983 when it was filmed and broadcast. Flavour very much of attempting a Grange-Hill-for-grown-ups series, with lots of contemporary themes - working class lives in council flats, unemployment and recession, skinheads, racism, punk rock, bent Met. policemen etc. I've slight memories of it as being really good at the time, but revisiting now it seemed very slow and predictable in first few episodes before it got moving. It is more of a subtle character study of small people living small lives than something which shouts its messages loudly (Eastenders) or bangs the table (Boys from the Blackstuff), and is well worth sticking with.

Some great 1970s wallpapers

Goofs:

- lots of cars too young for their episodes. I started capturing them until I decided too many to bother with, but here's a 1982-83 Sierra in ep1 (1977-78)
[Image: 01-43sierraa.jpg] [Image: 01-43sierrab.jpg]

- Midway through episode 1 (1977) Johnny walks his dad to work, who carrying a folded newspaper with the partly visible headline "Denis warms US up", (presumably Denis Thatcher, who in 1977 was not headline material, so this would be a 1983 paper used on set during filming). In episode 2 set a year later, Johnny again walks his dad to work, who is carrying the same newspaper.

Rejects: too many Cortinas, Marinas, Escorts and other background porridge to deserve captures. So I soon gave up. But here's a hospital trolley from ep2

Plane for impdb in ep3, supposedly going to Amsterdam

... but may well just be the most convenient plane photo they could drop in.

Naah, you need more Highland Park - that's a Leyland, not a Transit.
