Is "larf" even a real word? |
◊ 2023-07-29 00:14 |
As real as 'gonna' or 'wanna'. |

It sounds like something Pinky would say. |

It helps to be British. Firstly the variations in accent in different parts of the country mean that the word “laugh” may be pronounced as either “Larff” (in the heathen south) or “Laff” as I do. Secondly we have this, https://quoteinvestigator.com/2018/11/14/laugh-hurt/ To which I must add that the phrase “Only when I laugh” in its ironical sense is understood by most within these islands. It has a sibling in the other typically British put-down - Doctor: “Does it hurt? Patient: “Only when I do this” (for instance - “only when I pay my taxes”) Doctor: “Well, stop doing it then”. -- Last edit: 2023-07-29 09:35:28 |

I was 'gonna' say "it helps to have a non-rhotic accent", which does not seem to be the case for the other lot in this comment section. Putting it simply: larf = laugh. I studied 'sounds and accents in English' at a community college last year, part of which we went to Yawk (York) - so yer, you could say I have a bostin idea of how English is supposed to sound like in specific parts of Blighty. |

It dawned on me, having read your remarks above, that “Larff” is indeed wrong. It should be “Laaahf” since, as you say, non-rhoticity applies. I also forgot Birmingham where the word is pronounced with the long “a” as above, and also the rhotic West Country, from where some of the rhotic accents originated. There is also the malign influence of spellcheck or whatever you call it. -- Last edit: 2023-07-29 10:00:49 |

Totaly unrelated to this or the 1981 film Only When I Laugh, the title Only When I Laugh was also a TV series forty-odd years ago. With only one TV channel, we were lucky enough (?) to have this on Norwegian TV, IIRC even during saturday primetime. |

sometimes its better to have one fun and interesting TV channel than 50 that helps you improve your zapping skills.. ![]() that reminds me a co-worker who just paid his car's registration : Him : Just paid my registration , all that money.. Me : yeah, i know, it hurts the wallet.. Him : well, it didn't hurt that much, the girl behind the counter was a cute one... |
