only 2 lincolns were customised for this movie, one was destroyed in filming, one was later broken..as of 2005 someone in the uk has built an exact replica..for the front and back bumpers hes used some from a Mk 4 Ford Zodiac!! update, 4 were built for the movie, supposedly all sheet steel, but when you view the one which rolls over the police cars in slow motion frame by frame, one can clearly see the obviously fibreglass rear fender panels disintegrating in the impact!!, also the vehicle which goes over the cliff at the end of the movie was a mock up on a late 1970s thunderbird.

Actually, there were six Lincolns made for this movie...1 made of sheetmetal, and 5 fiberglass replicas...all 5 replicas were destroyed in the film, and the original was auctioned off in 1984 at a George Barris Kustom Car Auction.

Is this film any good? It looks very B-Movie. I remember once reading about it in a film magazine in a jokey video dungeon section.

Upgraded the movie with HD captures. Some garco's&sixcyl's comments have been edited with same pictures but now in HD quality. Thanks to both.

Definitely not B-movie at all. You should see it if you can.

It was a B-movie, for sure, but good times if you watch it.

My main problem with this movie was the amount of undercranking they did to simulate speed...especially noticable with the police cars, since it made the lights on them flash REALLY fast.

This is one of my FAVE movies. I am a total car guy and I love ANY movie made with the car as the main subject. Corvette Summer also ranks among my top faves.

The whole movie has been uploaded on youtube. Check it out ;)
PS: There's an AMC Matador police car missing from the page.

Is this movie better than Christine?

Ford_Guy US

I thought both were good, actually. But they're also very different movies in certain respects. This one is a bit darker and more mysterious.

I just watched the whole thing on youtube and this is good because it has more action and christine was good because it had more of a plot. In the end, i like this more

The ending was great and yes I did see what was in the smoke, don't want to ruin it by mentioning it. When i said "in the end", I meant after watching both movies. I wasn't talking about the end itself.

Hi, I just signed up for this site and decided to pass on some info about The Car. I lived in San Diego and there was a business out in El Cajon that sold movie cars. I was able to buy the only one left from the movie The Car. There were six made in all and this one was a fiberglass body over the Lincoln body. It was rough and had no interior, wires all over the inside as it was remote controlled for the movie.
It did have just a drivers seat and it was drivable but not ready for the street by a long way's. I bought it because I really wanted to drive it on the street but never did. Didn't have it very long and that was back in 1979/80. I have been told that it is or was in some collection someplace in New York but don't know for sure what happened to it.
It was fun while it lasted and I wish I had kept it.

I remember this car when it was in El Cajon in the 80's. The business has been long gone but I went there when they had "The Car" displayed. I had to have been about 8 years old and as disturbing as it may seem, I would watch the movie over and over again. It wasn't until I was able to see the car in person did I never watch the movie again. I remember trying to look into the blacked out drivers window and while doing so that memorable sound of the honking came on. Cruel act by the owner who later tried to convince me it was fake while I was crying and wanting to get the heck out of there. Although I haven't seen this movie in a long time it's still one of my Favorites!

Yes The Car was in a showroom with other movie cars in ElCajon, California. It was still remote controlled and would also start and rev to sound just like in the movie. My mom was looking at it when it started and she almost had a heart attack. It had a stronger and different sound because they figured out that if they cut square holes in the exhaust at the header pipes it just sounded different than round holes so it had a series of square holes in both header pipes.
When I bought it it was at his home out in I believe Lakeside, been many years now but it was in his garage.
I was able to sit in it and check it out for the first time. It was very strange to say the least but I like cars that are different so I went for it.
Never did get it street worthy and it was a fiberglass shell over the Lincoln body and it didn't seem solid enough to hold together to drive every day plus all the wiring would have to be cleaned up and it looked like more than I wanted to get into to make it a driver so I didn't keep it. Fun while it lasted and I would like to know where it is today.

That's an interesting story. And it looks like there are at least a few people in this world that are JUST LIKE ME. I was a small kid when I saw both The Car and Corvette Summer. Have loved those cars ever since. And always figured that some day I would own one or build one of each.

My wife thinks I'm crazy for STILL dreaming of having them. What can I say? Different is good.

I remember perfectly this movie which I saw in the TV in the 80s, I was 8 years old and makes nightmares so I found her terrifying! for moviegoers, it was a B-movie, Steven Spielberg had launched the fashion with Jaws and everybody in wanted to make similar, although this movie in summer makes with a low budget some special effects date a lot and seem ridiculous today, in comparison John Carpenter to fact much better with \"Christine\" there is no doubt above

I must be a "The Car" movie freak. In one week I watched it 22 times and I'm not kidding. As a child it scraped me to death. The horn still drives me crazy but in a good way. I was 5 when I saw it (I'm 40 now). My oldest daughter and I watched it right after I taped it off of TBS (I was NOT gonna miss the chance to see it after 28 years). Well, after seeing this she decided it would be funny to play a prank on me. At that time the horn still scared the bageebees out of me. She got her trombone out and played the perfect "the car" horn. OH MY GOD!! I was doing dishes and water went everywhere. I grounded her...no I didn't. Lol I would loooooooove to get to see a car in person. I don't care if its in one piece or fiberglass or metal or anything. I loooove this movie and car now. My littlest has seen it with me over 50 times now (all my kids, 3 girls, have grown up watching it. They ALL loooove horror movies just like their mama :)She even picks it herself for our mom and a movie night. In fact we are watching it right now for the second time. We are a military family and could plan a trip to see one if it is kinda close to San Antonio. If anyone knows of one anywhere and they would let us see it please please let me know. There were 4 built in 6 weeks, 3 Stunt models, 1 for Glamour Shots, the Stunt models were destroyed during filming, and the Good ones in a Private Collection
