Based on true events in Uruguay - left-wing radicals kidmapped a US counter-insurgency advisor - but filmed in Chile, not long before the military coup against Salvador Allende's socialist government (September 11, 1973).

Director Costa-Gavras would go on to make Missing (1982) set during the coup in Chile.

I can see a lot of old timers on the road. I read somewhere that the country is too poor to make their own car and that is why they keep their own car for more than thirty years.

Taking into account the fact that this film was made in 1972, most of the cars are not very old.

P.S. Could you be getting Chile confused with Cuba?

It is a 1972 film but still the cars are 30 years old on average. In Southern America (Uruguay, Chile, Bolivia) some people still drive in 1920's cars even today. Model T's are still common there.

Some of the posters here seem to assume that people in LatAm still ride horses in cities... Cars now average around 10 years old, mostly small models from VW, Fiat, Ford, Chevrolet, etc. You may have (recently) acquired money in Finland, but knowledge seems to be harder to find...
