 With the roof up, I'm not sure how to tell if it's a Hess & Earnhardt conversion or an official XJ-S convertible.

 Yes they did. Actually I've just remembered the difference - H&Es had a much smaller rear window /vehicle_619810-Jaguar-XJ-S-XJ27-1986.html
