Wipers were obviously really a problem in the Soviet Union. I've read some books from people, mainly foreign correspondents, who had been there in the 70ies and 80ies. Everyone wrote the same, that it was a kind of ritual, always to take the wipers with you, when you have left the car. About the other COMECON-countries I haven't heard that. Only, that Mercedes-owners shall mount the star off before. Indeed, these capitalistic symbols were always getting lost in the first night there. ![]() Right besides my PC here, there is one star hanging, from my grand-father's W123. In spring 1978, on the way to Elbing/Elblag and Danzig/Gdansk, a parking-thief tried to get it, but couldn't make it. And when it has happend? Sure, in the first night, in Schwerin. ![]() |

There was a similar problem in Greece - well, Corfu, anyway - in the 70s; the car-rental office where we hired a Fiat 500 advised us to remove the wiper blades when leaving the car unattended. I usually forgot, but the one evening when it did rain I watched the guy in the Škoda Octavia next to me struggling to fit his blades ... whereupon it stopped raining. |
