1985-1987 C-20 Custom Deluxe: This truck has seen better days. Here you can clearly see what is left of the name badge: |

It still looks better than some others I have seen. I have seen many of these trucks so badly decayed around here alone. Cancerous rust cover over 80 percent of the truck. Mirrors, trim, fenders, and bumpers mangled or missing. I’ve seen some with chassis damage, the frame warped causing the truck to distort in the center or run lopsided down the road. But despite those issues, some of them can still keep up with modern traffic. GM over engineered these trucks, and that over engineering becomes evident in their "will to live". Their power-train can last forever with just minimal maintenance. The body of the truck would rust away before the power-train would quit. I often think if the trucks could talk, they would say something like, "please put me out of my misery". The body is almost gone, but the engine, transmission and driveline system want to keep going. Its like what happens to some people when the human body starts to fail, but the mind is still in good condition. Very sad. |

I'm still amazed at how many trucks from this generation I see out on the streets, still going strong. These and Blazers...Suburbans seem to be a lot rarer. I even still see some original 1973-1974 models being driven around. It is a testament to their durability and popularity. |

Indeed there are still a lot of these running around here as well, they are especially popular with all of the farmers |

By the way, I'm guessing that the rearview mirror is a replacement? |

That’s one reason why the majority of these trucks never get restored. They work so well most people still see them as work trucks, not a classic that you should park in a garage for preservation. This snippet from the Chevrolet Truck Color History book, by Tom Brownell & Mueller points out that they still hold work related roles instead of being fully recognized as classic pickups. The day/night rearview mirror is factory correct, its placement on the windshield is not. |

maybe added by the owner, as I am sure some chassis cabs didn't come with a rearview mirror |
