Is Wolf the real name? or just a version of Defender?

Officially 'Truck, Utility, Medium'. The designation 'Wolf' comes from 'Wheel On Left Face' - the location of the spare.

Interesting, chris40. :) What is your source for the information? Is it other than Wikipedia?

The 'Wolf' name was certainly officially recognised and in use at Land Rover Special Vehicles design at Solihull in the early 1990s. I worked for them on the design and testing of 24 volt systems and winterised equipment. It was never openly known within Land Rover Engineering as being derived from 'Wheel On Left Face', although naming of Land Rovers at Solihull was always haphazard.

Those of us without inside knowledge have to research where we can ... :p

... No problems with that. I certainly don't think it impossible. ;)

Its an interesting comment, although I rather think that Wolf was applied first and then some wag said that means 'Wheel on left face'.

Is there any context with the "Wolf", made by Mercedes Benz, resp.Puch? The G-Modell in military-version is called "Wolf" in the Bundeswehr-term, too.

I thought, the name "Wolf" was used by the Bundeswehr, because they had named their vehicles since a long time with predator-names (Leopard, Gepard, Marder, Wiesel, Luchs, Fuchs...). By the way: the Wehrmacht had this idea before ("Tiger").
