The best looking Discovery, in my opinion. A bit of controversy surrounds the Discovery Series II (L50) concerning it's four-wheel drive system. They all had permanent four-wheel drive with two-speed dual range transfer gearbox. The transfer gearbox was a Land-Rover LT230 unit, designed by Land-Rover itself, and dates back to the original Range Rover Classic, specifically from 1970-1988. Its supposed to have a manual centre differential lock. Enter 4-wheel electronic traction control. It was introduced for the 1999 Land-Rover Discovery, and was very effective at routing torque to the drive-wheels that needed it most, via applying ABS break force to the slipping (spinning) drive-wheels. Perhaps Land-Rover saw how good the traction control system was, or maybe it was the 1998 Mercedes-Benz ML (W163) that arrived one model year earlier, which is to blame. Whatever the reason, Land-Rover decided to leave out the shift linkage needed to lock the centre differential in the LT230 transfer case. Thus relying solely on 4-wheel electronic traction control for not only side-to-side torque transfer, but also front-to-rear torque transfer as well; a potentially fatal flaw for the four-wheel drive system. Clever (or not so clever) owners could still crawl under the vehicle and, with a tool (preferably a wrench) "persuade" the centre differential to lock. One would need to be very careful not to melt one’s own skin on the scalding hot transfer case... ![]() In 2002 however, Land-Rover took the next step and completely removed the entire locking mechanism, leaving a conventional centre differential. For every problem, there is a solution, and shift linkages can be purchased and installed for 1999, 2000, 2001 and some 2002 models, allowing the driver to lock the centre differential. For later 2002 and 2003 models, shift linkages and locking mechanisms can be obtained in any number of ways and installed. |
