This car is a 220 S / 230 S, Body W111. Not W 108, please see the fin tails and straight windows. The headlights are from US version.

Strange that it is a US version since it has a french plate and that the movie is in France :??:

The headlights were popular options on european cars.

The road markings look yellow. IIRC France doesn't have yellow markings like that, so could this scene be from reshoots/additional filming in the US?

There's another scene with a US-spec car:

Yes,much of the road footage was filmed in the mountains around Los Angeles hence the U.S Merc with french plates.Apart from the really obvious Gallic scenery(Paris,Monte Carlo,Monaco etc),all the generic mountain-y road stuff is America.

The headlights at this car aren't the optional ones, they are the sealed-beam-version for the U.S., so the scene above is probably shot in the U.S.

Hahaha, they took care of the Benz. The car wasn't crashed, they just put black painted wallpapers beside it to fake crash-damages

Anyways, a nice way to handle, better than to crash such a good car.

The Renault 10 Major wasn't crashed either.

Just to confirm that this was filmed in the US, the first photo from ahight's comment shows two European road signs placed on top of American yellow diamond-shaped signs.

Right front fender was removed, something is attached to the door and is in place of it's fender,(all one piece, instead of two)tire/wheel appear to just be set beside car,no broken glass, hood is intact,no smoke.....staged wreck!

You maybe right Buc84, I never thought of that, and besides, who would want to wreck a nice classic mercedes-benz like this anyway.

Dear friends,

The US regulations obliged separated lights (position and turning signals) from headlamps, I have a 64 220 S with such arrangement. The position lights and turning signals are placed between grille and headlamps in a very ugly orange bulb similar to Porsche 356.

The lights placed together with headlamps, as shown, were the initial design, sold until 61, I am sure. The year the lights were changed I am not sure, sometime between 61 and 64.

The fender placed mirror also send this model to initial production years.

I agree with you. By the mirror placed on the wing, it's an older car ( 220 S or SE ).

in the *staged wreck* if u look at the bottom of the wheel well of the crushed fender, u can see the actual side of the car (intact) and u can tell the wheel is just leaning up against that, and the car is NOT wrecked. but yes, the front fender is removed.

This car took a bit of a beating, in this main picture its front bumper is already dented up but in a chase it hits a pottery stand (after Herbie hits it) and ramps off a higher ledge (after Herbie) and while a bug may come out okay after a ramp I'm not sure about a big heavy Benz.

They probably couldnt afford to buy a car to wreck, so they borrowed one or used one belonging to a crew member and tried to be creative.

Sometimes I almost wish they actually DID wreck this car.
