Probably because the car was designed different than the ones back in the 60's.

She had been stung by a mosquito and carted off in an ambulance, and the mosquito was coming after Alan and the children. What were they supposed to do? Not escape in the convenient car with the keys still in it?

Most cars back then had either column shifters or manuals, poor Alan must have felt dazzled by the shifter on the floor.

Alan's father's car was a 1965 Ford Thunderbird, which from what we see when he drives off, had a column shifter.

These still look pretty good to this day. I even still see a couple zipping around my town.
