There's also a shot (maybe only in the extended cut?) of a mid-70s Cadillac Fleetwood that drives up to Kong, who picks it up and throws it into a building and it catches fire. They used a miniature for the last part; I saw that miniature for sale at a swap meet in the early eighties. It was handmade of aluminum and was about two feet long. The seller wanted over a hundred dollars for it, and it was pretty crumpled and scorched, so I passed...

I haven't seen this movie (or any of the King Kong films aside from King Kong vs Godzilla), but I'm excited to see Kong climb the World Trade Center!

Would be cool to own the Cadillac though - would it being in your possession still qualify for "Owner of this vehicle"?

Shoulda gone for it. $100 for an authentic movie prop is a steal. I assumed the year was 1982. $100 then would be $252.44 today.

I saw the remake a while ago and the climax at the WTC was pretty epic with Kong climbing it and the battle with the Army helicopters. The shots of the lobby inside the North Tower were pretty nice, seeing what it looked like at the time. It's a pity I'll never be able to visit the Twin Towers now that the new One and Two World Trade Center look nothing like the old Twin Towers or each other. The person who actually made the current design of Two World Center said if he had been part of rebuilding the WTC from the start, he would've rebuilt the Twin Towers.

Added the Cadillac Fleetwood from a deleted scene mentioned in the above comments.

I haven't seen the original or any of the other remakes yet, but this one is a lot of potential left unfulfilled. It lost me the moment "Dwan" opened her mouth. What an abomination of a character. As Alfred E. Neuman would say, "Yecch!"
Horrible background projections for a movie of this budget are unpardonable, too, but at least Charles Grodin aping Robert Shaw in "Jaws" was a fair bit of fun. Rick Baker was terrific in his gorilla suit, so it stands to reason he was not named as one of the recipients of the special achievement Oscar (I guess it was a special achievement to spend 500,000 of 1976 dollars for 15 seconds of footage).

Anyway, upgraded to original HD as the remaster looks like an unspeakable horror on my end. Added a few things from both versions of the movie.

Now, the arms and robot were designed by Rambaldi but were engineered and built under the supervision of Glen Robinson. Originally, De Laurentiss tried to commission some aerospace engineers to manufacture the robot but they required nearly a year and a half to complete it. Thus, it was up to Robinson, who had it built in less than five months. Built? Yes. Working? No. Well, not quite. When finished the contraption weighed in at nearly six tons, filled with some 3,100 feet of hydraulic hoses and 4,500 feet of electrical wire ensconced inside an aluminum skeleton, covered with an additional two tons of molded rubber and imported Argentinian horsehair, styled and stitched in by famed wig maker, Michael Dino.

In theory, the prop could walk, turn at the waist and move those attached arms (built separately) into sixteen unique positions as piloted by a half-dozen technicians manning twice that many levers each -- all of them Italians, who needed all instructions translated, which caused even more delays. And when it made its debut, in front of an anxious crowd at Shea Stadium, including several execs from Paramount, and they engaged those levers, Kong’s eyes started to move, then his mouth opened in a silent roar and the crowd went nuts. But this was soon followed by several screams and a lot of fingers pointing to one of the legs. (Other reports said it was toward the crotch.) Seems several hydraulic hoses had burst and Robo-Kong was hemorrhaging out gallons upon gallons of crimson-tinted fluid. Things never really improved from there, which explains why the contraption wound up with so little screen-time in the finished film – and most of that were just static long-shots. All told, a mere 25 seconds.

I'm curious why you think that mike, most people (myself inculded) would say PJ version of film is spectacle compared to John Guillermin version and there are many good reasons why people hype it up as the best of the Kong films (of which I'm not saying Kong 76 is bad by any means, far from it infact)

I actually really liked this one. Was an interesting change, seeing King Kong climb up the World Trade Center. Plus, Jeff Bridges is in it.

It's a great location where they land in Kauai, HI that set the stage for later productions on the same island like Jurassic Park and the top of Mount Everest in Waterworld.
