Addressing the Nation DVD set - vol 1 (1933-35) of 3 BFI compilation sets of shorts from The GPO Film Unit.

... with the backstory of Britain - apparently known in those days as "England" - being the first country in the world to introduce postage stamps. ".... this particular film is the GPO’s most widely-seen production, indeed one of the most widely-seen films ever in the UK." Can be seen on youtube - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6gSsJHlLFg4

The final film posted from this DVD set, which has not been as fertile as hoped. Not the best BFI compilation but largely due to the bland content and style of most of the films, although it seems these were the first government-funded films and therefore cutting edge innovation. GPO Film Unit (launched in 1933 from the previous Empire Marketing Board film unit) later became the Crown Film Unit which by early 1940s was producing more interesting stuff for the wartime Ministry of Information and then 1946-52 for the Central Office of Information (COI) as later BFI compilations. BBC in 1935 was still basically wireless only, so was not involved in films - it started sporadic/experimental TV broadcasts in 1932 with first regular service from October 1936 but only to London

Quiz question - which was the 2nd country in the world to introduce postage stamps?? (Anyone who watches the film on youtube is disqualified from entry)
