17 minute feature on The Newbury Weekly News - cutting-edge journalism in deepest Berkshire in 1952, now best known for being a service station on the M4. Very slow, but has some good street shots of lots of stuff for us. About half of it can be seen here - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=02UfYo2dPTs - and a 1988 programme uses several extracts - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rOYagthCkj0 . Taken from BFI/COI Collection Vol 5: Portrait of a People 2-DVD set. Rejects: a 2* bus Newbury High Street - I thought about a pick'n'mix but ... Newbury agricultural show with a couple of estates ... one of which is a Hillman |

The front entrance bus is probably a Bedford OWB of Newbury and District, which had Duple or Mulliner coachwork, but they also operated a few Dennis Ace 20 seaters. The high street sports a Super Snipe, a Vauxhall with the boot open, and a Minx, plus a Series III Wolseley and a Ford(son) ET6 belonging to Vono, who made beds in Staffs. (Tividale, now in West Midlands.) Newbury best known for being a service station? You're obviously not a racing man. https://www.freeracingtips.co.uk/newbury/ -- Last edit: 2016-09-13 14:01:25 |
