I do not remember exactly the 2008 movie, but I think this one stands as a prequel of it. For sure it is a prequel of the 1975 movie (as the 2008 is supposed to be). It seems that they reused the cars from the 2008 movie. I guess that there were some leftovers, else why wouldn't they have simply made cars based on other models?
