This was based on a true story, detailing the events of Philip Hutchinson. Naturally, a chase occurs involving his desperate efforts to escape and the chase ends after he commandeers a pickup forcing an elderly man to drive, only to be captured after the helicopter pilot blocked the route. The real chase was captured on video and has subsequently been aired on various reality TV shows, and I have also seen it myself. Strangely however, I cannot find anything about the real life chase :/

Yes, I do remember this chase. If I'm correct, the real-life chase occured in 1989. Anyways, the man led the Denver, Colorado police through a wild chase, and in the course of the pursuit, he violently mowed down a police officer that was blocking the street (this was captured on tape). As SWF said, he later comandeered an elderly man's truck and forced him to drive. A news helicopter had been watching the man ever since he had abandoned his first vehicle (a Blazer) but the police had lost them. Since at the time the helicopter crew had no way of communicating directly with the police, the helicopter crew were the only ones that knew the suspect's location. In a desperate move, they blocked the street and the truck was forced to stop, just as the police were closing in. I did a search of the original chase on youtube, but all I came up with was a 3-part story of the chase from the old show "Rescue 911." Check it out if you want.

It was in 1988, and the scene where the police officer is killed was also shown in the film. Thanks for the link :)

Comment about this on IMDB:

Quote Phil Hutchinson and I grew up together and it's too bad the folks who produced this movie didn't bother to look into why he did what he did and what made him tick. Not once do they mention his father's suicide, his grandmother's suicide, his military service, his time in a Mexican jail, his ex-wife and child. The movie could have gone a long way towards trying to understand when bad things happen to good people but it was just a bunch of schmaltz on the folks who came in contact with Phil. I was glad to find out that his sister Dana sued the television station that repeatedly sold their footage to other news outlets. As for one of the final scenes where the reporter states "an eye for an eye"...excuse me, but while he didn't intentionally try to kill the policeman (the man stepped out in front of his truck), did he deserve to be shot so many times that he was unrecognizable to his family and friends? That was pure vigilante justice and unnecessary force.

Interesting if somewhat biased take on it, I must say.

i didn't know they made a movie about this. i have seen this on rescue 911. FWIW the truck that hutchinson stole near the end of the real chase was a green chevy pickup from around 1973/74

the real chase can be seen here. all of the arial footage is real, the rest of it is a recreation
