TRX wheels/tire combo? Does that mean this is the sportiest model of the Capri?

This is a Mercury Capri Black Magic edition, a special dealer package offered from 1981 to 1983. The features that define it are the gold TRX wheels, gold seat inserts with vinyl side bolsters, the gold pin striping and lettering on the outside, and gold grille accents. At each front side corner where the design of the pin striping came to a boxed-in termination point there was a gold cat's head which was a symbol Mercury used at the time. These items could not be purchased separately, but instead came as a dealer-prepared package and the codes were stamped on the ID badges under the hood. This model came with several engine choices, from a 2.3L inline four, a turbo version of that same engine, to a 5.0L high-output V8. There were three colors available, Black (Black Magic) White (White Lightning, which was still called a Black Magic package even though it was painted white) and Red (Crimson Cat). The TRX handling suspension was designed around the type of tire that was going to be used on the car, The Michelin TRX radial, and since this was a metric tire those tires were the only ones that would fit the stock rims. Only a few thousand of these vehicles were manufactured (under approximately 4,000 combined for all years and colors) making it an extremely rare version of the Fox body. The majority were Black Magics, then White Lightning, then perhaps 100-300 or less Crimson Cats. The 1983 model is extremely rare and is the only Black Magic package year to come with the compound "bubble back" rear window. I owned a 1982 Black Magic RS with he 5.0L V8 for ten years and am extremely familiar with this car. It was a real head turner in its day and not a week went buy that I didn't have someone come ask me about it, offer to buy it from me, etc. I had put over 350k miles on it and sold it as it was getting too difficult to maintain. I do still miss it. It was a very eye catching and fun to drive car.

Interesting to see how this dress-up package theme evolved over the years and over the sea from its origins in 1975 in UK as a cigarette promotional on Ford Capri, echoing the John Player Special livery from Lotus F1 cars. We started with the black/gold Black Midnight combo for the normal cigarette (which was the most common), then got a rarer white/gold White Midnight to represent John Player Special Lights - never had a red version though. We have one Capri in US with similar livery (but the white version), which is interesting as both Midnight liveries were probably only built in UK, yet US Capris were sourced from Germany. So I guess because Mercury distributed the Ford Capri in US in 70s, they then adopted the idea for their own Capri, presumably hoping no-one by now would associate it with ciggies.
