Just got back from the theater, I'd rate this the weakest of the four (sadly). There's just no bad guys like the Nazis. Some loose story plots are brought together but overall it just didn't leave me impressed. |

saw it yesterday as well. The third one remains the best. This should be on second place equally with first one and the second one is the weakest. |

I think Temple of Doom is a much stronger film in many ways. First of all the lead female role is introduced right away in the opening song in the restaurant. You don't have to wait forever until Karen Allen shows up and she's just too old to be really attractive. Blanchett as the enemy in Crystal with her ridiculous short hair is just not pleasing to the eye. Think how completely insane the main enemy is in Temple with ripping hearts out AND the blood that he makes Indy drink that makes him evil. The scenes where they explore the entrance in Pankot Palace, it feels so claustrophobic and all the insects seem so real. The monkeys and the prairie dogs just didn't do it for me in this one. Not to mention that Harrison Ford is younger, more agile, and handsome. Crystal did have some good chase scenes with really nice '40s and '50s sedans but for the most part I wasn't happy with it. -- Last edit: 2008-06-03 04:35:52 |

The movie was quite fun overall, especially if you weren't going in with high expectations. I would rank it above Temple of Doom and below the Last Crusade with Raiders being the best one. |

agree...weak film to the point that it could have been made as a non "Indiana Jones" movie. |

That's ironic, considering that in Raiders and Last Crusade the main villains aren't actually Nazis. And before I get corrected, I'll clarify: in Raiders, Belloq was a French archeologist who was just using the Nazis as muscle. In Last Crusade, Donovan was an American businessman who was, again, just using the Nazis. So for all their "oomph," the Nazis in both movies are background villains, tools for the non-German main bad guys. Crystal Skull is the first movie since Temple of Doom whose main villain and their minions have both belonged to the same group - Mola Ram and the Thuggee and now Spalko and the Soviets. -- Last edit: 2008-07-04 15:14:07 |

That's funny, since Raiders and Last Crusade would be immensely worse if the Nazis weren't in it. It doesn't matter that they weren't the main enemy. Who does Indy end up fighting the most in those movies? It's the individual Nazi soldiers, generals, tank teams etc. They show the swastikas so many times just because they are the symbol of supreme evil. If the Nazi's weren't tied to artifacts like the Holy Grail and Lost Ark there wouldn't be that "edge". Nazis are the best enemies because they're interesting to look at, they have uniforms designed by Hugo Boss. Films about the Japanese don't have the same aesthetically pleasing effect for me. I want to be impressed by enemies in movies, I want to really feel like they are an overly confident threat to the protagonist. I think you make a good point but without lines like "Nazis, I hate these guys" it just wouldn't be the same. |

The movies have always been a melting pot of different bad guys. The Nazis are just the ones people remember because, well, they're Nazis. That and they were used twice. Had some other group been used as Donovan's muscle in Last Crusade (like, say, the Hatayan Sultan's men exclusively), with the Nazis confined to Raiders, would people still say, "You can't have Indiana Jones without Nazis?" I agree that the Nazis are the most visually interesting villains, but twice is enough. I'm fine with the Soviets in Crystal Skull (and the Thuggee in Temple of Doom, for that matter). |

The Thugee just creeped me out. They could have snuck in a few Nazi's, but the chinese gangsters were a nice touch |

What would Nazis be doing in Shanghai and the remote regions of India? |
