You can't make a Humber out of a Railton. -- Last edit: 2013-12-29 16:18:33 |

Looks to me like a Railton Straight Eight of 1936 or thereabouts. Certainly not a Humber. |

No point, ever, in looking at radiator mascots. There was a big after market sale for all sorts of things in the 20s and 30s, which is the reason many car manufacturers went for mascots themselves, Royces with Miss Sykes, (that should be Thornton, Sykes was the sculptor, error noted on 27th Nov 2018) Bentley's Flying B, Alvis with the Hare, Hispano Suiza's Cigogne Volante etc. As I know from my Bentley, the things are easy to unscrew and swap for something else, or steal, which is why you often found cars with the manufacturer's emblem removed and a plain cap fitted. -- Last edit: 2018-11-27 22:11:16 |

Known as an Anglo-American Sports Bastard (there were others), Railton's found that a large American engine/chassis combination with some expensive coachwork could out-perform a Bentley or an Alvis at a lower cost of sale. In the case of Railtons a Hudson engine was used. Later on in the firm's history a smaller car was made using British mechanicals. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Railton_(car) -- Last edit: 2013-12-29 20:22:01 |

Blinkers are an after-market item, they were not invented in 1936, so could be any shape without affecting the original car's identity because they would be later fittings. What you see on the front wings of the "University" saloon are parking lights. All of the Railtons were fitted with coachwork of a semi-bespoke nature. There would be many minor variations according to what the original owner wanted. According to my reference book, the models made between 1933 and 1939 were called the "Eight", the "Light Sports" (two only!), the "16.9hp", the "10hp" (Standard chassis), and the "21.6hp" all being Hudson chassis with either straight eight or six cylinder engines. You can't see much of this car, but the hood irons suggest that it is a drophead coupe and the bodies of that type available for the 1936 Eight were the "Fairmile", the "Carrington" and the "Sportsman". I cannot say which this is. -- Last edit: 2013-12-29 20:44:49 |

Dear John, M.k,and Chris. thank you, this has been bugging me for months, So many parts were shared or common at this period, it has quite foxed me, and driven my wiser father back in England quite potty. that grille is a dead ringer though. Thank you for laying this to rest. love this site, happy new year yubitzume |

Mis-spent youth in my case was not playing in snooker halls, but reading "Motor Sport". |

Nice car, shame about the registration number being more suitable for the 1950s than the 1930s. |

![]() at 37:13 the chase begins. Two questions: what is the parked blue car? Did they really use speed bumps in pre-war UK? |

1) Can't identify from the view available. 2) I have now been driving for 49 years and 11 months, and do not recall speed bumps until relatively (for me) recently, say 20 years max. |

Same as here in the States. So Hastings and his Lagonda are traveling over a "period error." |
