Judging by the architecture, this was clearly one of the UK-filmed scenes. How'd all these American cars get over there? |

There were several US bases in Britain in 70s and 80s when we kindly stored lots of your nuclear capability - many staff cars brought over by the military and privately for the folk stationed on them. So sold-off squad cars, vans, trucks could be sourced in reasonable numbers. |

Thanks dsl-That explains a lot. Many of the cars used in this movie were not high-dollar or sought-after "cool" cars and not something British buyers would want. The Cadillacs and the recurring red 60s mustang are exceptions. The military explanation seems quite plausible. |

There are also a lot of people here who like and own American cars. One of the Admins here even: /profile.php?id=stronghold |

Am down in North Yorkshire quite often and see loads of US vehicles in and around Harrogate because of the Menwith Hill base - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RAF_Menwith_Hill , http://www.nostarwars.org.uk/ - which is RAF in name only - really a US enclave. Also Fylingdales - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RAF_Fylingdales - near Whitby and close to Heartbeat locations - /movie_101114-Heartbeat.html . Tend not to see US military or commercial vehicles outside the bases, but loads of UK registered but LHD US spec cars seen locally - US makes plus Japanese and European - mostly mainstream family cars. Interesting to see how US-spec Focus etc look different from UK cars or big Honda people carriers which aren't sold in Europe. Used to also see similar west of Glasgow for the Faslane submarine base - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HMNB_Clyde but less in the last few years. Probably still some other parts of Englandshire with bases or US airstrips where same happens. -- Last edit: 2012-01-24 14:48:56 |
