This scene was a reenactment of the escape of Eamon de Valera who had broken out of Lincoln Gaol with the aid of Michael Collins and Harry Boland in Lincoln on the British Mainland on the night of the 3rd February 1919. Prior to the breakout, de Valera and 70 other prominent Irish nationalists were arrested on the 17th May 1918 by the British Government troops for allegedly conspiring with the Germans in an attempt to discredit the Irish republicans with half sent to HM Prison Usk in Monmouthshire, Wales and the other half, including de Valera sent to Lincoln Gaol. Collins managed to escape the arrests and planned to break out de Valera, as de Valera was a Catholic, he worked in the prison's chapel, allowing him to take a wax impression of the Chaplain's keys and send it to Collins. With impression of the keys, Collins had the key made and sent it to de Valera inside of a fruit cake, however the key didn't work. After sending three more fruit cakes, Collins and Boland was able to send a key that worked. In the real breakout, de Valera and two other Irish nationalist prisoners, Seàn McGarry and Seàn Milroy escaped from the prison before making their way across the allotments at the back of the prison and headed down Wragby Road where they got into a taxi waiting for them outside the Adam and Eve pub and went to Worksop and then got into a another taxi waiting for them to take them to Sheffield and to a safehouse in Manchester. -- Last edit: 2024-10-25 15:40:47 |
