The end of the film is set in Sofia. Alexei (Oleg Menshikov) is part of a Soviet delegation visiting Bulgaria and his wife Marie (Sandrine Bonnaire) comes with him. (It's probably not too much of a spoiler to reveal that they're hoping to take the opportunity to escape.) However, just to confuse things, some of the scenes set in Ukraine were also filmed in Bulgaria. |

In the scene before this, you can see the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral in Sofia, so the filming location here should be pretty obvious. |
