So it's a Sputnik, no? |

If it was the name for the Russian market, yes. In West Germany it was named "Samara", in the DDR, too, or "Lada 2108 Samara" (I just have checked the 1989 GENEX-catalogue). |

Oh, it was released in 1984, I haven't known that. Were differences between the 1984/85-model and the 1987-version? In 1987 it came on the West German market and still had this odd plastic nose, which even the test-drive-journalists disliked. In late 1988 it was announced for the DDR-import, and still had this nose (as visible in the GENEX-catalogue). ![]() Note the last passage! There it's said, that the term "Sputnik" is stil written on some parts, but this name was never offically used in the Soviet Union/Russia! Wiki doesn't say anything about the export to the DDR. I remember it from late 1988, early 1989, that some friends there had big expectations about the Samara (I've organized copies of test-drive-articles and sales brochures for them, I remember), and have tried to get an order for it (in the DDR you had to wait between 8 and 20 years, before you could buy a new car - and always the fucking DDR-shit or COMECON-vehicles ![]() -- Last edit: 2010-05-29 01:05:48 |

For sure already in 1990, at least some, German versions had new black plastic grill - here it was still like on the pic. At the very end of 1980's my parents friend bought a 2107, he was interested more in Samara, but the car was too low for him and he couldn't normally seat in it... -- Last edit: 2010-05-29 16:18:43 |

Dashboard seems to be on the wrong side for a British car, but I'll take it as converted. |
