Due to the lack of a CHMSL no newer than a 1993. |

The door looks like a 1997-2006 Wrangler's. |

this SEEMS to have - by the break in the reflection on the right rear tub corner - the rear gate door stop that mounted to the tub corner, and contacted the tire when the door had reached the intended limit. if memory serves, that would make it a [YJ] rather than a [TJ], and an 1987-1995 (but indeed, a pre '93 by the lack of the high mounted brake light - presuming that it wasn't removed). many of us removed the high mounted light in order to use the rear tire carrier with a larger than original tire... but that sure does NOT seem to be the case on this one. ![]() |

you right this can be a 1993 Jeep Wrangler (YJ) and NOT a (TJ) |

Would removing the CHMSL be street legal? Cops likely have more important issues to focus on than a missing CHMSL. I have seen Wranglers, CJs, etc. exchange the factory combined brake lamp/backup lamp for a ancient round brake light with no seperate backup lamp. That clearly is wrong in my eyes. Knowing when that Jeep is backup is very vital to other drivers. Cops should pull over those rude Jeep drivers who remove their backup lamps. |

indeed... reverse lights are vital. any state with an annual safety inspection wouldn't pass you without them. removing the CHMSL wouldn't be illegal, though operating the truck without it might be. a safety inspection mechanic would likely have an obligation to fail the jeep for not having one if initially so equipped, but most probably wouldn't. the original style of CHMSL that was fitted to my '95 YJ was only compatible with tires of approximately 31"... so there was a time when the truck was nearly new that i removed it to use the spare carrier with a bigger tire. in north carolina, i was never denied a passing inspection, or pulled over for running without one. |

We don't have safety inspections in Calif. Most states have them, correct? |

actually in North Carolina reverse lights are not part of the safety Inspection process and are not required (even if originally equipped) even if the vehicle does have them they are not required to work. In the state of Virginia if the vehicle has reverse lights they must be operational to pass inspection, but if the vehicle is not equipped with them (or they have been removed) they are not required. |
