DodgeMan wrote The T-72s used in Red Dawn were not real. The US government had not even been able to get hold of a real one at that time,
and they had been trying real hard. If you look at the wheels and the drive sprockets they look nothing like the T-72. A rental "T-72" for film shoots can be found at http://www.melodyranchstudio.com/images/army/T-72.jpg. The "T-72"s for Red Dawn are most likely based on an M-48 frame,
but some of the return rollers are missing.

badlymad wrote Changed this and the other tank to Made for Movie T-72s to reflect the fact that they are vismods based on M8A1 cargo tractors.

It's a fake T-55. Something else was modified to have a look-alike tower. The carriage of a T-55 has much less wheels: http://www.morozov.com.ua/images/p91l.gif (drawings from the designers of T-55)

IMDb says this:

"The movies replica Russian T-72 tank was such a precise replica that when it was transported to the studio, two CIA agents followed and wanted to know where it had come from."

It looks like they cut open an M41 and added another road wheel...

The Veluzat brothers used a number of surplus U.S. Army M8A1 Cargo Tractors as the surrogates for their T-72s, ZSU-23-4 and an American M1 Abrams tank in "Red Dawn."

We know it's fake, that's why it's listed as "made for movie". :)

Looks more like a Patton.

But seriously, there was no chance in them getting a real Russian tank.

I thought it must be an early model Patton chassis (M46/M47) but then realized the US has not has a tank with a front sprocket drive snce the M4 Sherman so I dont know what chassis this is based on...
