In Episode 2 of the first season, the black "Daytona" has front lights behind plexiglas plates...

...while in the Pilot film (part II) (episode 1.1/2), it has retractable front lights.

Since they are both about the same car we could merge them, except if both are seen a lot...

Found on the Web... About Crockett's Daytona... (i could have put a link, but you would have discovered a lot of other stuff not related to the car).

Detective Sonny Crockett was granted a number of undercover props to augment his identity as a high rolling, fast dealing drug runner. At the start of the series, he drove a midnight black Ferrari Daytona Spyder, Florida license plate ZAQ178, on loan to him by the Metro Dade County Vice Department. The Daytona was Crockett's prized "possession" and served as the perfect complement to his low key, yet high living identity. While more exotic cars such as the Lamborghini Countach could have been selected, the Daytona proved to be a wise choice by the producers.
Crockett's Daytona was an important visual part of the show. The sleek, mysterious Ferrari was integral to the undercover role of ultra cool Sonny "Burnett". A more exotic car would have been too conspicuous for his underworld drug running role, although many of his nefarious contacts preferred the flashy cars. The Daytona also provided a large dose of V-12 muscle in the high speed pursuits through the streets of Miami.
More formally known by Ferrari aficionados as the 365 GTB/4, the Daytona was not well known to the general public. In fact, when the pilot episode aired, viewers were confused by the relatively obscure Daytona, and mistakenly identified it as a custom Corvette (although ironically, they were correct -- read on).
The original Daytona was introduced as a Berlinetta (coupe) model in Paris by Enzo Ferrari in 1968. Production continued in the U.S. for ten years until it was discontinued in 1978. The 4.4-liter V-12 (60o slant) was one of the last front-engined production models in the Ferrari stable. A 1971 road test review proclaimed the Daytona as the "fastest production car of all time." The 352 bhp engine was housed under the shapely front hood and provided spectacular performance in both the standing 1/4 mile (13.7s @ 104 mph) and 0-100 mph (12.6s). For comparison with other sports cars, the Daytona reached 0-60 mph in 5.4s. The Aston Martin Vantage and the Porsche 911 were contemporary cars with similar performance.
The Spyder was a convertible version which was originally made by the Scaglietti house in Modena, Italy prior to the alliance of Ferrari, Pininfarina and Scaglietti. Original Scaglietti Spyders are quite rare, especially in the U.S., and most conversions are performed by custom car companies specializing in exoticar restorations. Berlinetta models were transformed into Spyders by sawing off the roof and remanufacturing the entire rear end. European Auto Restorations in Costa Mesa, California reworked Berlinetta models in 1979 for $15k and delivered a Daytona in three months.
Car design genius Pininfarina was responsible for the sharp, angular lines of the Daytona which was in marked contrast to the rounded shape of vintage Ferraris. The clean aerodynamic lines of the long-nosed Daytona allowed Group 4 racing without major modifications. Spoilers were not used at all. Early models were manufactured with unique Plexiglas fairings which spanned the entire length across the headlights. Later models, designed for the U.S. market, had retractable headlights.
Crockett's Daytona Spyder was actually a look-alike replica, built using a 1980 Corvette chassis with Ferrari-designed body panels and real Ferrari hardware inside. According to Popular Mechanics, the original replica was "spotted on a lot in Newport Beach by the show's producer." Motor Trend magazine, however, claims the two show cars were bought at an auction. Al Mardikian, an auto importer had the two replicas built by Tom McBurnie, but he found himself in legal trouble and the two cars were confiscated by the Feds. The producers in turn purchased the cars from the government.
In 1986, McBurnie Coachcraft and California Custom Coach both offered Daytona Spyder kits for building replicas, and turn-key models built on a Corvette chassis were available for $45k.
By the start of the third season, Ferrari executives were getting miffed that the ersatz Daytona was gathering so much attention. The television audience was unaware that the show cars were fake. The producers intended for the car to be treated as a genuine Ferrari and Crockett never hints that the Daytona is a replica. Given the constructed reality of television, it is no wonder that the fake car was treated as real. In any event, Ferrari North America offered to provide two bona-fide Ferraris for Miami Vice, and they chose their flagship model, the 12-cylinder muscle machine, the Testarossa.

[quote=maindrianpace]It was a 1980 Chevrolet Corvette C3 that had been modified with Ferrari-designed body panels by specialty car manufacturer McBurnie. The car was designed to look like a 1972 Ferrari 365 GTS/4.

As legend has it, Michael Mann spotted the car in a used car lot some time prior to shooting the pilot movie and thought it would look nice in the series.

The original color was Canary Yellow with Black Interior, with Blackwall Tires, and Alloy Rally Wheels, Michael Mann decided to have it painted Midnight Jet Black, by having the interior reapostered in tan, by leaving the Blackwall Tires alone, and removing the Alloy Rally Wheels, and adding Spinner Spoke Wheels and by leaving the retractable front square headlights with pexiglass plates, and the chrome door handles alone.

In the 1980s the car gained new notoriety as Detective Sonny Crockett's car in the first two seasons of NBC's hit television series Miami Vice Ironically, the actual car used for filming the show was a modified 1980 Chevrolet Corvette C3. In reality, Don Johnson didn't actually drive a Ferrari in the first two seasons. For publicity reasons Ferrari, reportedly upset and unhappy, that a replica was getting so much attention, and being portrayed as a bona fide Ferrari, the automaker later supplied, and donated two brand new Testarossas for use in the show. However, the stock twelve cylinder Ferrari engines were removed and replaced with eight cylinder Chevrolet engines to decrease maintenance costs.

The last time the 1972 Ferrari 365 GTS/4 was shown was during the last two episodes during the third season, until it was blown to pieces with a hand held stinger missile launcher during an illegal arms deal.

Both the 1972 Ferrari 365 GTS/4 and the 1986 Ferrari Testarossa, were stripped and had camera mounts which were mounted all over the place.

Right, the Daytona Spyder driven by Don Johnson into 1st series of the show was actually a 1982 Mardikian 350 GTS,a uncanny replica of true 365 GTS/4 Series 1(fixed headlights,1968-1970)realized in small series by Syrian-origin mechanic-engineer Albert Mardikian(that would own a garage already in Syria, before to come in USA,where set up in Hermosa Beach,California, just a workshop-garage for done body modifications--one of our early realizations was the Targa-version,US-specs,of Lamborghini Countach LP 400 S);when was marketed the Mardikian's Daytona replica was billed popularly as"Ferralet",after the fact that would fits a(fake)Ferrari Daytona Spyder GFRP body clone mated with a 1978-1982 Chevy Corvette Stingray 5.733 cc. V-8 engine, chassis and running gears(Ferralet=Ferrari-Chevrolet);for bore an aura of luxury, the customer at moment of its own car delivery
would got the replica with a gold-plated ignition key!!!The photos at time of press release shown the car with quad rounded headlights under a plexiglas fairing--just matches original Daytonas--but strangely, into show, they were replaced by quad squared headlights--the true Daytonas don't had shown so-shaped headlights never, being rounded-shaped either 1968-1970 fixed-way or 1970-1973 tilt-extraible pods-mounted

BTW,were done also other tricks:seems that was recordered a Ferrari V-12 engine sound when accelerates and shifting gears,to replace and hide the original Corvette's engine sound into running scenes and give the credibility of a Daytona, while was only a fake Prancing Horse-badged-replica,US-made

I don't would say you that are wrong, but you've interpretated in wrong way some words that I've told before:

1)I had told that Daytonas by Mardikian fits(production ones in small series,not the ones of show,that just to clarify better)5.7 lt.V-8 powerplants(for that reason had told '78 to '82'Vettes engines,'cause early '70s 'Vettes fits a V-8 7.4 lt. and production Mardikian Daytona replicas--or better 350 GTS as were commercially-named--never were fitted into the engine bay of that replica with the'Vette's bigger capacity power unit);

2)For many times was told me(even by US-penfriends at which into'80s--no Internet,guys--had ask infos about the car of Don Johnson)that the Daytona into series was a fake one,but one told me that was got sawn off the roof of a true Ferrari coupè,turning it as a spider, another had told that was a made-for-serial replica;now, knowning that into Eighties' the sole Daytona replica made in the world was that of Mardikian, was automatic guess could be one of them...(the sole other replica-Make of Daytona Spyder that I knew was the English Southern Roadcraft V12,but their replica will appear later, when show was closed,so was excluded could be that)

BTW,on one thing we are agree...That's not a Made-in-Maranello true Ferrari 365 GTS/4"Daytona"(unofficial name for Italian Make to use in the States,'cause would exist there also a Dodge car called Daytona)

 :??: [:crazy] What is the black Daytona doing there??

From TV.com (Link to "www.tv.com") : Originally intended as the first episode of the 1986-87 season, 'El Viejo' was pushed back because Don Johnson was in a dispute with Universal and NBC over a pay raise; reportedly the hijinx threw off Willie Nelson's busy schedule and he nearly backed out. Johnson returned to the set when Michael Mann reportedly leaked plans to replace Johnson with Mark Harmon.
Because the episode was pushed back from its intended air date, Crockett's black Ferrari briefly rises from the dead, though it is not explained in the episode.

Yes, Don Johnson was sitting in a real Daytona Spyder in the pilot. It's during the first hour. Crockett was waiting for someone to come out of a small restaurant, and the camera angle showed the car from the left side. The triangular window is clearly visible, which is an item that did not exist on the replica. I think the wheels were also visible, wire wheels, which were real Ferrari wheels. The next time Crockett is shown in a Daytona was slightly into the 2nd hour as he and Tubbs were driving somewhere, and at the point it is clearly the replica (no triangular window).

Oh give me a break you could easily get that thing to whoop the real daytonas ass with a C5 motor and transaxel, after all its already about roughly 700 pounds lighter than the actual daytona

and its not a kit its a rebodied vette, specifically an 81 and a 79, camera car and the stunt car respectively, however the stuntcar bit the dust but the camera car which was the only car used in the pilot besides the real daytona he sat in for 5 seconds is still around and in loving hands:

Sorry but its just kinda funny that people are laying into it so hard considering how much they had to tone down the action scenes when they switched to the testarossa just to keep those cars intact, and they had a detomaso pantera stunt car for that very purpose and they were still afraid of even using that.

by the way there is shots of the actual daytona they used in the pilot over at one of the miami vice websites, and by actual I mean a REAL daytona spyder I guess the plan originally was to do what they did with the testarossa in S3 but it fell through and they stuck with the markadian cars.

This is correct of why what us "MV" fans call the "ghost Spyder" shows back up after its been destroyed.

However, the whole Mark Harmon replacing Don Johnson rumor or "story" is actually questionable. Michael Mann and Mark Harmon have both stated in interviews that neither one knew anything about that and Harmon was never considered for the show. The rumor is that production purposely leaked the so-called Harmon replacing Johnson thing to the press to try and "scare" Don to come back to the show--however, in reality Mark Harmon was never considered for the show and he was never contacted about it. Don Johnson did not return to the show because supposedly they were going to replace him with Harmon...he did demand a higher pay raise to stay on the show...which he subsequently got. Without Crockett the show would have faded out way sooner than it did, and the producers knew it. ;)

I love both his cars...and enjoy seeing both Ferraris, even if one is a replica built on the chasis of a Corvette.

In the 80's I provided some cars for the Miami Vise show (Film Cars) Yes there was a contract with a Local Doctor for the real car that ended up with some slight damage,
There were several cars produced after the Mcburnie's by Roberts, according to one of the show's camera men Will Williams. I have one built on a 70 that has four camera mounts and coax cables still on the car. We used it recently on the spring break film in St. Pete. Fl.

I recently purchased one of the replica's with Roberts name on the left headlight lens. It is titled as a 1978 Chevrolet. It had a 350 5.7 Corvette engine and a 4 speed Muncie manual transmission. I just replaced the engine with a new 5.7 crate engine and new 6 speed manual for better highway performance. It has 37K miles on the odometer and the top of the left rear fender is somewhat wavy. The previous owner said that was where a camera had been mounted for the Miami Vice series. Imay consider selling it.

This is the real Ferrari Daytona loaned to the production and seen 20 minutes into the pilot for a few seconds. No evidence if a factory convertible or a later conversion, though there's no question about it being a Ferrari. Allegedly, subsequently suffered some damage and was withdrawn by the owner as already stated above (not yet a million dollar car back then but still expensive..). The replica's first appearance occurred later in this episode and from then on was the only "Daytona" used by Crockett until its "destruction" in the 3rd season.
