Does sit say what bodystyle, because I don't think this is a "coupe"? I would guess hatch? |

Yeah it's a hatchback |

Are we sure about 1997? It may still have the old logo, but looks like the sharp edged one only used in 1991-92 (which in North America was only ever used on the 929) Maybe it was registered used? |

I think it's the rounded badge. The lozenge-shaped one had to be replaced after that lawsuit. Meanwhile, that plate is now on a 1999 Nissan Terrano II. |

It certainly looks like one of these https://www.flickr.com/photos/61090099@N04/46657389025 (a 1992 626). -- Last edit: 2025-09-11 23:20:04 |

Exactly @zodiac, I was thinking about this generation. Its successor (and the last 626) did only have Mazda badges (not Efini as this one) and I think it did not have a complete rear light bar if I recall correctly |

Yes, the following (1997+) generation had this rear: https://s1.cdn.autoevolution.com/images/gallery/MAZDA626-Mk-5-Sedan-3545_11.jpg I believe it's a 1992-96 model too. |

For a great many years the number plates issued in Sweden were fewer than the vehicles which have been registered historically. In other words, only those who paid annually for the plates could keep them (a small fee, presently 69 SEK), the others were issued again, usually on new vehicles but also on some who wanted to re register their vehicles. LHM 720 was probably first issued somewhere around 1986/87, which means this Mazda is already using a reissued number plate. -- Last edit: 2025-09-11 23:36:09 |

GE14J201484015 - have to figure out the wmi. Then we might be able to dig up a production date. JMZ but my normal sources aren’t able to decode it. -- Last edit: 2025-09-12 15:31:05 |

According to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Mazda_model_codes and Link to "en.wikibooks.org" : GE = 1991-97 Mazda 626 / Mazda Cronos / Mazda MX-6 / ɛ̃fini MS-6 / Autozam Clef / Ford Telstar 14 = 4 door sedan J = Engine 2 = Check digit The next in line should have been a letter telling the specific year this car was made. @dhill_cb7: Where did you find this VIN? What does wmi and JMZ mean? -- Last edit: 2025-09-12 23:08:09 |

I just ran the plate on https://biluppgifter.se/ JMZ is the WMI for that VIN for this vehicle. Reasons unbeknown to me but in the 1990s Sweden’s plate check database occasionally drops the WMI from the plate search. No idea why. |

Our register did the same. Possibly due to too many digits for the system to handle? Never figured that out. No you won't find the year indicator on (non-US) Japanese cars. They use(d) a system where the platform code and serial number were used. This number was then converted to a matching VIN for other markets. So apart from the US market which follow strict rules you can deduct the JDM chassis number and put that into a decoder to find the date of production. And no, I don't have that at hand. |
