This is incredibly rare footage of the 1952 front-engined T2 prototype, which quickly proved to be an unworkable disaster due to problems getting rid of the hot exhaust gases and the fire risk from unburnt fuel (paraffin) as it passed along channels in the chassis and side members, and it was quickly dismantled without publicity. I've never seen any other pictures and there is almost no information out there about T2, and whether, for instance it ever received proper bodywork. Its successor T2a was built from T2 parts into a P4 body, but crucially installed as a rear engine with a massive exhaust funnel on the bootlid, but despite a genuine 1952 road registration (MAC 273) was kept out of sight. Some very rare pictures exist of this bizarre creation |

Commentary does not name this car, and I'm now wondering if comments above should be revisited. The key issue will be whether this is front-engined (which can only be the short-lived T2) or rear-engined (which suggests an unrecorded primitive ancestor of T3). As the only info on T2 is specific about the exhaust gases being channelled through the side members to the rear (which was the big problem in action) this doorless solid-sided construction with an exhaust dispersal through the boot could fit. Or the whole gubbins could be in the rear, and the front stuff seen here is irrelevant. Also - without knowing Rover interiors at all well - the dash panel seems possibly later 1950s, not dissimilar to what emerged in the P5. So questions without answers .... I've got better quality source footage in another film coming up later, although may not solve anything further. However the narrative above about T2 and T2a is still solid. |
