This scene was based on the attempted murders of James "Jimmy" Hollis and his girlfriend, Mary Jeanne Larey who were both attacked by the Phantom Killer on a secluded road off Richmond Road, just north of the Beverly area of Texarkana. While they were attacked at night, the attack occurred on the Friday night and it wasn't the 3rd March, it was the 22nd February.
