This scene was the reenactment of the murder of associate and friend of the Morans, Graham "The Munster" Kinniburgh who was shot as he was getting out of his car by hitmen, Stephen Asling and Terrence Blewitt outside his home on Belmont Avenue in Kew, Victoria just after midnight on the 13th December 2003. Kinniburgh was a former member of the Painters and Dockers Union and the Australian Shopping Lifting Gang, the Kangaroo Gang and had taken part in their shoplifting and bank robberies sprees across the UK and Europe in the early 1960s with the Kangaroo Gang's leader, Arthur "The Duke" Delaney. He later returned to Australia and became leader of a safe breaking gang, the Magnetic Drill-bit Gang. During the 1970s and 1980s, his gang had been responsible for the number of high-profile bank robberies in Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane. Among the robberies the Drill-bit Gang were suspected of committing was the robbery of the Bank of NSW Country Branch at Mullwarbrah, NSW on the 23rd November 1978 and the robbery of the National Australian Bank Haymarket Branch in Sydney's Chinatown District during New Year Celebrations in the early hours of the 1st January 1988. During his time with the Drill-bit Gang, Kinniburgh had been convicted for assaulting police, attempted murder, bribery, escape, extortion, fraud, possession of firearms, racketeering, and resisting arrest. By the 1990s, he became an associate of the Morans and member of the Carlton Crew and was involved the MDMA Trade in Melbourne. At the moment when he was shot, Kinniburgh managed to return one shot at the gunmen before he died. The gunmen then made their getaway in a blue Ford Falcon EA (bearing Victoria registration, DTP-061), heading north along Belmont Avenue towards Parkhill Road before doubling back to cross Cotham Road before dumping the vehicle and set it alight in a hidden cobbled service lane on Doona Avenue, about a kilometre from the scene. The investigation in the murder, revealed that the Falcon was stolen from South Melbourne on the Saturday before and was hidden until the murder, the investigation also revealed that as the Falcon was burned in a laneway not visible on any maps, it was indicated by the detectives that the killers had carefully studied Kinniburgh's street and the surrounding areas. The detectives on the case, suspected that the killers were members of the New Boys Criminal Gang who saw Kinniburgh as a threat as he was aligned with the Morans and the Carlton Crew. It was revealed that a month before the murder, in November 2003, a front man for the New Boys Gang was arrested by the Purana Taskforce detectives for threating to kill a detective and his wife, two weeks before the murder, the front man was released on bail. This particular front man was suspected of the murder but was revealed that he had his bail conditions altered and was in Queensland with Benji Veniamin at the time of the murder. At Kinniburgh's funeral, Mick Gatto was one of the pallbearers who carried Kinniburgh's coffin. -- Last edit: 2025-06-13 10:50:32 |
