My guess is people were scared to drive them presumably for fear of advocating the bourgeoisie and the prewar "Rüstungsindustrie."

That is not true - there was an active prewar scene in the DDR - they even got own license plates. And as in the whole Eastern Block they drove everything, also stuff from Nazis and later on from the Klassenfeind.
