394 bxa was not seen in anything before mid 80's if at all. i'll check you 1st post skywatcher68, i'm intrigued !! i owned 437 bxa which was the original carry on matron and some mothers do have them (the hospital visit) Wandsworth ambulance. There was a long standing dispute regarding which one featured in the programmes/films. 437 also is seen in oh lucky man (nuclear plant explosion). JCB, whats the Sam Kidd reference? i liked Sam Kidd (he was in same concentration camp as my father in law too. |

The Ambulance is known as a Wandsworth because it was built at the LCC works in Wandsworth (london borough of). The frame was a modified Austin/Morris chassis. I gave details in the Austin memories website under LD's. The numberplate letters do not signify age, however i believe C and D were the start of dating inline with such registration requirements. Part of the reason is because they were fleet vehicles usually the letters signify where they were registered. As fleet vehicles any problems would mean interchanging parts etc to keep maximum numbers on the road. i had 2 wandsworths bxa was 1958 and exa 1962. |

Sam Kydd was in a LOT of films and TV shows, like this ambulance It appeared to be compulsory for him to have a bit part in British black and white war films ![]() In the real WW2 he was one of the defenders of Calais in 1940. He spent 2 days fighting and 5 years in a POW camp. His wartime experience book ' For You the War is Over' is an excellent read and worth seeking out. It used to be buttons on Amazon but now seems rare. -- Last edit: 2022-08-16 10:13:15 |
