Double rear bumpers, a slightly wider appearance, different plate lights, lack of petrol filling cap between the licence plate and the right rear light and the fact that the hood is not covered by a metal flap makes me believe this is rather a W 111/ W 112 Cab. Please compare this U.S. 1968 280 SL http://www.powerful-cars.com/php/mercedes/1968-w113-280sl-us-spec.php with this U.S. 1966 250 SE Cab Link to "hooniverse.com" . Made for U.S. because of the illumination of the licence plate. |

When watching the youtube clip one can clearly see that the ladies are sitting in the rear seats. The W 113 SL didn't have a rear seat. Early grill, chromed inside rear view mirror and early horn ring on the steering wheel argues this is most likely a 1962-65 Mercedes 220 SE Cabriolet [W 111]. Made for USA because of the head lights and the number plate illumination. -- Last edit: 2014-09-21 14:56:33 |

This is not a W 112 but a W 111. The 220 was never made as a W 112 (air suspension and recognizable by a big chromed side strip which this doesn't have). The options were: - 1962-65 220 SE Cabriolet [W 111] - 1966-67 250 SE Cabriolet [W 111] - 1962-67 300 SE Cabriolet [W 112] And later (with a different appearance): - 1968-71 280 SE Cabriolet [W 111] - 1969-71 280 SE 3.5 Cabriolet [W 111] If you want to, here's a link http://wiki.mercedes-benz-classic.com/index.php/Kategorie:W110/W111/W112 . |

Agree it looks a 220 SE (Convertible in the US) W111. Although it lacks the front indicators between the grille and the headlights, the steering wheel with this horn ring and the mirror relocated to the door indicate 1964+ (these changes were made during 1963).![]() |

@rpcm: Concerning the door rear view mirror: I'm trying to get a 1967 Mercedes 250 SE [W 108.014] running again (which proved somewhat more difficult than I first imagined because of problems finding original spare parts, that is spare parts that has not been replaced (as spare part numbers when ordering new parts at the local Mercedes dealer)), and when trying to do just that I've been delving deep into the secrets of Mercedes spare parts, hence my comments concerning Mercedes on the imcdb, and left me somewhat confused. If I understand this correctly, Mercedes didn't have outside rear view mirrors, as standard fittings, until 1968 when this mirror Link to "www.authenticclassics.com" (part number 108 810 17 16) arrived. The Mercedes I'm working on doesn't have outside rear view mirrors, but could have been ordered with these http://www.curbsideclassic.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/CC-18-077-800.jpg http://www.curbsideclassic.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/CC-18-082-800.jpg (perhaps part number 108 810 05 16) from the works or had a range of different mirrors like Desmo, Cipa or Huma fitted afterwards (I've seen several cars), supplied by the supreme Mercedes dealer in Sweden called Philipson's. Philipson's was a major figure in Mercedes history and Gunnar Philipson was once (after the WW2) offered buying the whole Mercedes works and owned a major share in IMA, the Belgian company that made the Univerzal. I'm concidering fitting the works supplied mirrors as I don't dare driving without (a habit). Cars made before the W 108 range, I've occasionally seen fitted with the so called 'Swan neck' mirrors Link to "de.wikipedia.org" http://sv.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mercedes-Benz_W113#mediaviewer/File:Diba_mb_W113.jpg (wrong wheels on the latter one), but it wasn't compulsory in any way. At least not in the countries I know (Scandinavia, Germany, UK). What is your source concerning the front wing --> door mirrors occuring particularly MY 1963/64? What is your experience with Mercedes? The W 111 Cabriolet above has the W 108 mirrors which makes me believe it has been fitted at a later date. I don't think it can prove anything model year wise. -- Last edit: 2014-09-23 19:45:14 |

About the relocation of the exterior mirror of W110, W111 and W112 models from the front wing to the door as well as the change of the shape of the horn ring, I read somewhere that they happened during 1963, but I didn't find evidence that these changes occurred at the same time. About this car, I know this door mirror must be from a later car, but I found that it makes sense to consider that if it's placed on the door, it's replacing other that was already there and not one that was on the front wing, specially when it's seen this car has this type of steering wheel. |
