Later on the driving schools got the idea, to choose more "exotic" cars to get new customers. But back then, they were so common (ca.90%, when I made my license in 1988), that the Opel Kadett E Stufenheck(Sedan), I made my license on, belonged to the "exotics". Not to talk about the VW 181, my driving teacher had in his stock, too.

I find excessive also the BMW 1-series diesel that I've seen used here, it wouldn't be better to use something of smaller, exactly like an hatchback or a sedan?

It was a big point of discussion, when a driving school in Hannover, where I grew up, had bought a BMW [E30] - and the discussion became bigger, when the next BMW came new, an [E30] Cabriolet. My best friend made his license on annother absolutely "exotic" car: a Fiat Tipo.
