"Fahrschule" is the school driving, right?

Yes. And the VW Golf, especially the Diesel-versions were in the 80ies the most common driving school cars in Germany. Later on the driving schools got the idea, to choose more "exotic" cars to get new customers.
But back then, they were so common (ca.90%, when I made my license in 1988), that the Opel Kadett E Stufenheck(Sedan), I made my license on, belonged to the "exotics". Not to talk about the VW 181, my driving teacher had in his stock, too. :)

Today they mostly use 'Compact SUVs', like VW Tiguan, Audi Q3, BMW X1

Indeed, my driving school car was a Mini Countryman.

What do you mean for "exotic"? Something of different from the ordinary Volkswagen but always a German car or what else?

Is not a bit too much "extreme"? I find excessive also the BMW 1-series diesel that I've seen used here, it wouldn't be better to use something of smaller, exactly like an hatchback or a sedan?

@ElSaxo: back in the 80ies anything besides a Golf I or II Diesel was "exotic". It was a big point of discussion, when a driving school in Hannover, where I grew up, had bought a BMW [E30] - and the discussion became bigger, when the next BMW came new, an [E30] Cabriolet. My best friend made his license on annother absolutely "exotic" car: a Fiat Tipo.
