But maybe I'm being too generous in my belief of how people are Anyhow, back on point, what others are saying is that it is very odd for a new vehicle to be bought and destroyed almost be immediately after on a production. It doesn't matter how cheap or expensive it was, for many there would have to be a good reason to buy and destroy a perfectly new vehicle. But maybe it was donated to this production, or they just had the money to do it.
Ingo ◊ 2012-08-03 22:59	Most probable it was a pre-production car, which would have been crushed anyways. As the new BMW's, which are destroyed at Cobra11. All car-makers are doing that. Except some single cars for the historic collection, they always smash their prototypes an pre-series cars. For the engineers they are only tools, nothing more. And it has juristic reasons, too. It's not possible, even not legal by law, to sell them on the regular market, because, they cannot make any -mandatory- warranty for those cars.

Neptune ◊ 2012-08-03 23:59	Some Camaros were certainly cheaper, more affordable. But that does not mean we can stereotype the car’s image as "a cheap car". Their sticker-price ultimately depended on how it was optioned. This applies to any vehicle. A well-equipped performance oriented Camaro Z28 for example, was far from cheap, boasting the 5.7 liter 350 cubic inch pushrod V-8, four-speed close-ratio manual gearbox and race-tuned suspension. There was also a laundry-list of luxury and convenience features that would gladly multiply the sticker-price (if your bank account could tolerate it). Adjusted for price inflation, a Z28 would run for about 32,000 USD, quite a lot of money back then. Obviously the Camaro abused in the show was a lower level model. -- Last edit: 2012-08-04 00:12:27

I'd rather see them destroy a newer model than a classic car, like they seem to do nowadays.
HunterMan ◊ 2012-08-04 01:14	The Camaro has never been one of the most expensive sports cars in the world necessarily...that would probably go to Ferraris, Lamborghinis, or Porsches. But, for America Corvettes, Camaros, Mustangs, Thunderbirds, Cougars, Chargers, Challengers, etc...are the higher end of sports cars--and have NEVER BEEN CONSIDERED CHEAP! Even the base model is not like buying a used compact/enconomy car here, guys. Even in 1978, a brand new base model of a Camaro would have not been considered "cheap" and was a popular sports car. Of course I would like the model with the most power (aka most likely the most expensive model) but back then I would have settled for the base too. I really can't tell if this Camaro in the "Vega$" episode was a base model or not? But, either way it's still too bad they got a brand new one and totaled it for just one episode.

HunterMan ◊ 2012-08-28 06:29	Yeah, prices back then were nothing compared to today's "insane" auto market! It's crazy that in 30 years the price of a new Camaro went from around $5000 to $35,000! (depending on how expensive a model you want) I bought my 1996 Z28 in 1999 (in mint condition) for $17,000 and I thought that was bad! But, I paid it off in 5 years and still have it. Back in the late 70's the base model Camaro might have been around the same price, or cheaper, than perhaps an Impala--which surprises me as in my opinion the Chevy Impalas by the late 70's had become the ugly, box-like rectangles that continued throughout the 80's. However, I think the top of the line Camaro was a lot more expensive than an Impala--as Neptune stated a few posts above, in the 8/3/12 post. So, maybe a brand new, top of the line Camaro back then was more comparable in price range to today's market than I thought? Anyway, perhaps the base model Camaro and the Impala were the most perferred Chevys at the time because they were the most affordable, and this is why they were so close in price range. -- Last edit: 2012-08-28 06:40:31
