TOP GEAR goes SNOW-BINEing!

As fans of the BBC TOP GEAR programme will have seen on last night’s show, for this week’s challenge Jeremy, Richard and James turned their minds to how to clear the roads of snow in the UK and overcome the chaos caused by last year’s wintery conditions.

Thinking of machines that are readily available during the winter months, they came up with the idea of a combine harvester (naturally!) – hence the SNOW-BINE was born!

The search for a suitable machine started at the end of last year, and following considerable discussion and consultation between CLAAS UK and TOP GEAR as to the engineering feasibility of various ideas, a plan was formulated.

The star of the show was undoubtly the 25-year old DOMINATOR 108SL which took everything in its stride and didn’t miss a beat. As you would expect, just fitting a big V-Plough on the front was not enough and other adaptations included a road grit dispenser, plus a flame-thrower on the back to melt ice, which Clarkson was left in charge of .......

Having built the SNOW-BINE, the next problem was ironically a distinct lack of snow just at the time of testing this new invention in the UK – so the team together with the DOMINATOR travelled to Norway to give it a thorough test, with remarkably successful results!

Meanwhile back in the studio, the audience could not fail to notice the guest appearance at the back of the studio of the flagship CLAAS combine, the latest LEXION 750.

For those who missed the programme, it can be viewed via the BBC Iplayer.

As with all these things, they don’t happen by themselves and a number of people deserve considerable credit and thanks in helping the BBC to make this happen.

Firstly, Mill Engineers for preparing the DOMINATOR before it went to the TOP GEAR engineering workshop - and especially Jimmy for servicing this particular combine for the past 25 years. To Alastair Tulloch and his service team at CLAAS UK for their expert technical advice (and patience with BBC assistant directors!). And to everyone at Saxham and Richard Long Transport for getting the right combines in the right places at the right time. Finally to Tom Pine and Dean Cottey for giving up two days of their time to give the LEXION 750 it's TV debut and the polish of its life!

I thought they were going to leave the head on and rig it up like a giant snowblower. Would have been much cooler!
