Is this a regular Defender, or army version? There's a bunch of these things in the Sontaran episodes although this one is the one the Doctor rides in, and the GPS system ("ATMOS" they call it) takes it over and almost drives them into a river. However the Doctor realizes the thing is programmed to do the opposite of any order given, so he tells it to drive into the river, and it stops. Then it begins to malfunction so he and his driver bail out anticipating a huge explosion, but then it just fizzles out, and he's like, "What, that's it?" My one nitpick is that this and the other Defenders are constantly referred to as Jeeps. -- Last edit: 2009-07-30 14:45:37 |

Basically it is a standard Defender 110, but AFAIK only those supplied to the Ministry of Defence (1985+) were ragtops like this with sliding side windows. Normally civilian versions were vans, pickups or station wagons, and had wind-down windows. It's probable that the Landies used in the series had already been sold off by the MoD, as from 1994 they were being replaced by the Defender XD ('Wolf'). |

I assume by ragtop you mean cloth/canvas topped with those metal "ribs" underneath, in which case, I swear these look like they have removable hardtops rather than cloth ones. |

Oops, you're right ... but I still maintain this one, at any rate, is MoD or ex-MoD, because of the sliding window. |

The ribbed roofn on this one means its an early Land Rover 110 (pre-Defender) from sometime between 1983 and 1987 which would fit with it being ex-MoD. |
