A very rare sight! It is the 10,5 cm leichte Feldhaubitze 18/40 auf Geschützwagen Lorraine Schlepper in the version made by Becker. There was a version by Alkett which had a different upper body. Usually this French made base vehicle, the Lorraine Tracteur Blindé 37 L TCR, an artillery tractor, was transformed into the Marder I using the 7,5-cm-Pak 40. Initially 387 tractors were made for the French Army, of which about 300 were captured by the Wehrmacht. In 1942 179 were transformed into quite capable hunting tanks using the 75 mm gun and the Alkett upper body (Sd.Kfz.135). Another 94 obtained the 15-cm-schweren-Feldhaubitze 13 M 17, a 150 mm howitzer gun, and both the Alkett (40) and later the Becker (54) upper body (Sd.Kfz.135/1). Only 12 were made using the 105 mm howitzer with both types of upper body. These twelve used (probably) the same Sd.Kfz.135/1 number. The Lorraine had a six cylinder Delahaye 103 TT engine with 70 hp. -- As always it is a bit difficult to give a country of origin and a year for such transformed vehicles. I would suggest to use 'France' as country of origin, 'Germany' as country it was made for and 1942, the year of transformation into a self-propelled howitzer. |
