I don't think it is a 250F because it looks to have a four cylinder engine with twin ports - note the eight exhaust outlets in the thumbnail shot of the engine. I am not sure who else was racing at this time. Being red, I assume it is Italian. There is an outside chance it is one of the old 1.5 litre straight eight Alfa-Romeo 159s resurrected and disguised for the movie? |

The Alfa 159 was a straight eight of only 1500cc which belted out up to 425 bhp on methanol. The exhaust system came out on the right of the car looking forwards, so we have a mystery. It doesn't look like a Lancia D50 with the pannier fuel tanks removed as the upper member of the front suspension isn't a wishbone shape. How about a Ferrari 553 Squalo? |

A Ferrari 553 Squalo is a good possibility. If we could see the outline of the body between the wheels it would help because the Squalo has a very distinctive shape: http://www.racingdioramics.us/1954_Ferrari_553_Squalo.html. I notice that it has a four-spoke steering wheel. The British driver Mike Hawthorn always used this type of steering wheel and he would have been driving for Ferrari at this time. |

I agree it is more likely to be a four cylinder Ferrari modified. |

To clarify: The private Enrico Plate team had two Maserati 4CLT cars, ie with 1.5 litre supercharged engines complying with the 1948-1953 Formula 1 regulations, which they raced in 1949-51. When Grand Prix racing moved to Formula 2 (2 litres unsupercharged)in 1952 in order to keep racing the team modified their cars extensively: enlarging the engine, removing the superchargers, shortening the chassis and restyling the bodywork, particularly the nose. In 1954 the formula changed again with Formula 1 now being for 2.5 litre crs. The Maserati-Plate's were now too old to modify again and be competitive. So Plate sold the cars to 20th Century Fox who remodelled the nose and added the fictitious "Burano" badge to make the "Burano" GP car that starred in the film. As an aside, one or both of the chassis became the basis of the unique Manta Ray show car made by Dean Jeffries. |
