Looks like a Gran Fury (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:3rd-Plymouth-Gran-Fury.jpg) - a vehicle for angry octogenarians, I guess... |

It could also be a Dodge Diplomat. |

Is there any way to distinguish between squad car Diplomats and Gran Furies? |

The Gran Fury has black trim around the tailights, while the Diplomat has silver trim. Also, the Gran Fury grill has 'Plymouth' on it, and the Diplomat has 'Dodge' on the grill. But since we can't see the grill very well, there's no verifiable way of identifying it correctly. |

Which was more popular as a police car? |
◊ 2007-10-28 01:29 |
Both were popular police cars in the 80's, but the Diplomat was more widely used. |

So, let's list it as a Diplomat - though the Gran Fury sounds so much better, in no small way due to the inherent pun ![]() |

Although i hate guessing...that's what's been done in similar instances where we can't tell if it's a Gran Fury or a Diplomat. Couldn't we possibly create another name for this, such as "Chrysler M-Body?" It's just a suggestion, but I know it's been done with GMC/Chevy trucks. ![]() |

Sounds pretty good. But in this case, Plymouth Gran Fury's have a logo between the front fender and front door, which this one lacks. |
◊ 2007-10-28 01:53 |
I guess M-body it too vague given that we are dealing with one of just two slight variations... I'd leave it as either Diplomat or Gran Fury and the above comments for the curious reader |

Ha! Indeed, some do -> http://members.fortunecity.com/statepdcars/fla803.jpg Too bad it's a mundane Diplomat - though still, a very nice, if equally ill-fitting, name. |

The Diplomat had the logo in that location too. This car is simply lacking it, as it was either removed or fell off. Maybe other people can put in their opinions on the "Chrysler M-Body" name. |

Some Gran Furies apparently didn't have the logo either - I guess it could've fallen off, but just as well it might have not been added for fleet versions (why would you "decorate" a police beater?), not to mention it looks rather old-fashioned, so perhaps it was dropped in latter model years... http://www.carlospomares.com/Pics/NYC%20Housing%20Car/DSCN1718.jpg http://members.fortunecity.com/copcarsite/mbody406.jpg etc. |

BTW - there is a possibility it was filmed in Canada, and then it would make it a Caravelle rather than Gran Fury... |

I've owned an Ex-Police '86 Gran Fury."Some" departments take off the emblems like those when they "letter & stripe" the cars.(Dallas PD were bad about it on Caprices inthe '90's) That said,in the case of my Gran Fury,it had the emblems, but the glue wasn't worth squat....had to re-glue 2 of the 3 after I washed it once!!!! |

I am not sure that it is a good idea ![]() ![]() |
◊ 2007-10-28 23:12 |
Indeed, I'm not exactly too keen on the idea, but I just wanted to find an alternative. So how should it be listed, then? |
◊ 2007-10-28 23:55 |
I'd say Diplomat, as you said that it was more used. |

If this is the one Harry throws the TV at it deserves 2 stars. |
