It's a Sunbeam Rapier. It can be a 1960 ( introduced in September 1959 ) Series III or a 1961 - 1963 ( intoduced in April 1961 ) Series IIIA. They were externally identical, but with mechanical differences.

Plate is from 1963 (it is a '267 COO').

So, it's a Series IIIA with its 1592cc engine ( the system doesn't assume the A ).

Is that A really important? III or IIIA, still a 3rd series. It is like the restyled Renault Clio, VW Polo, and other models that have an intermediate model, no? In such case the year could be enough.

Yes!

There are also five Hillman Minx Series IIIA on this site...

Well, Hillman Minx do not use the automatic "mk" system so it is not a problem for these, same for the Land Rover, but in this case I do not find so useful to have this one listed appart from the others, due to the non-use of the mk field...

Well, even though the exterior was the same, the car was really different because of it's engine size (1592cc instead of 1494cc). And since it can be determined (by the date of the license plate)...

And is the engine size a so important info to have it listed separately from the others (i.e. not between series III and series IV) ?

As it was said, the series III and IIIA are externally identical but, in this case, the reg. number allowed a more precise identification ( which is, in my opinion, more interesting ). Of course, to those more interested in the model, the reading of these comments will provide the information.

What I mean is: isn't it more useful to see it as series III in main listing and then see that it is a IIIa in the comments, rather than see nothing in main listing and see IIIa in this page?

That is a proper way to do as well: Series III in the MK-field, Series IIIA in the comments, if you prefer.

It's OK with me, do as you wish. As I also said, those who are really interested in these models will read the comments and the information is here.

I don't like the 'A' in the comments, sorry! :/

Why don't you extend the mark field so that proper (alphanumerical)-sorting is possible?

antp BE

If you explain me how to sort roman numbers or other complex text strings in SQL, sure :p
I could switch from integer number to float, to have 3.1 => IIIa

If you convert it into a text field it should work. I think we have no numbers higher than 9 so we should not get into trouble.

Opel/Vauxhall Astra is already at 8 and Audi A4 at 7, only few years left before the 10 :D
I do not want to have it as text field as it would allow users to put anything, this field was added to have a "forced" style for all cars of a model. Else we just come back to the same problem as what we had when it was put in the model name field. We will get Series 3 mixed with Series III, and so on. I already have to fix all the time this kind of inconsistencies in names, I do not want to add the "mk fixing" to my daily work :p
I think that the floating number could be a good compromise, as it will allow at the same time to handle restyling of Renault Clio and few others.

Hmmm, the undisciplined users are a problem ... :D

I guess your idea using a float is a good alternative.
