I was the owner of this vehicle at the time. It's a 4-door 1974 Dodge Dart Custom (6 cyl).
I think the labelling here as a background vehicle here is incorrect.
They paid me at double the rate of background vehicles because this was the car driven by the guy who comes after the kids after they knock down his mailbox, credited as "Man with Pistol."
The Dart appears only in one very quick shot!

The Dodge Dart was driven by DAZED stunt coordinator Fred Lerner, who played the part of the pistol-wielding former mailbox owner who gets dragged by the GTO. He was an important figure on set as it was Fred who often helped decide which actors were qualified to drive their vehicles and which were not for certain shots. Many of the vehicles would easily hit 120-130 mph! But placing vehicles on trailers or switching out stunt drivers cost the film versimilitude, and it was always a careful balance of ideals between looks, speed and safety. He also coordinated the brief chase between the Buick 225 and the C-10 Chevy truck that belonged to the character Benny, played by Cole Hauser.

Fred was easily the most experienced crew member/department head on set, his credits going back to the days of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. Car-centric and action-heavy films like Die Hard, Fandango, Heart Like a Wheel, the tv series Fall Guy were all under his belt, and his stories of working on blaxploitation classics, disaster blockbusters, auteur westerns, and fighting, driving or doubling for Steve McQueen, Paul Newman, Pam Grier and others were great fodder for legendary bullshit sessions during downtimes on set.

We worked with Fred Lerner again on THE NEWTON BOYS, where we had train stunts, nitroglycerine, biplanes, gunplay, horse chases, rodeos and more. A consummate professional, we lost Fred in 2009.

Remember, kids: "Tampering with mailboxes is a felony offense!"
